Bball Recruiting Megathread: Devin Mitchell on campus

Rusty here now. His kid riley playi well on offense. Good shooter and high iq. A little footslow on d. Also saw gotfrieds kid plah
Good skill set but does not have the body and speed yet to play with most of these kids. The hatfield twns are impressing. More later

I've seen Riley play a few times and there's a ton of mainly local hype (mostly from Rick Lewis, whose sons both played for Rusty at FCDS - which seems like a bit of an unstated confiict of interest, IMO). I'm personally not convinced that he's a D1 player, let alone an ACC-caliber player. I could be wrong and there's no doubt that he can shoot, but unless he grows 3-4 inches (he couldn't have been more than 6'1) I can't see him able to contribute at a high level. Drawing from recent history, Chase, Harvey, and Gary had enough time as undersized shooting specialists and they're all much better athletes, IMO.

HaHa that sounds like a description of Rusty as a recruit. I remember one blurb that said Rusty was a good shooter but while he was fairly quick on the football field he looked like a football player playing basketball on the court.

I still remember the Poop Sheet issue (back before the net I guess), where they ranked all of the incoming ACC b-ball recruits one year, and they had Rusty ranked absolutely dead last (even though he was technically coming on a football 'ship). He was the only recruit that they had as "low major" or some category like that. I guess his NBA championship ring would beg to differ on that one.

I'm just going to throw it out there: Riley may be his dad's son, but he's not nearly the same caliber player.

Why would you throw that out there? Regardless its little unfair to compare a 16 yr old kid to his father (one of our all time greats)

I think I remember from the Mike Drum era (and what an era it was) that employee kids get significantly reduced tuition but not a freebie.

I watched Riley play all three games. He is a very very good shooter, even off the dribble. His passing is good... he gets it, which most of of these AAU playground players do not have. Credit that to good coaching. That said, he is a little on the slow side, but not a sloth, got beat off the dribble or did not get off screens quickly a few times. I am no expert but I dont see high major or even mid major unless he finds more inches and/or speed. I do see a good college player at some level to be determined.

Our interest in Clark looked good but perspective is no doubt needed here....

IIRC tuition is reduced to essentially nothing (~5% maybe, still a couple grand but relatively speaking not much) but no discount for room or board.

Mitchell visited UNC this weekend & will be heading back for "Late Night w/ Roy" on Friday. A couple of his Shelton's quotes:

"The visit was really good," said Mitchell. "I got a chance to basically see everything. I had a meeting with Coach Roy (Williams) and saw the gym and all of the facilities there."

"He basically told me that he thinks UNC will be a great fit for me. Also that he will be wherever I am and that I will see them more than any other coaches in the country. I felt like he was serious because he just seems like a man of his word," said Mitchell.

"No, not yet," he said when asked if he had any favorites. "I'm still wide open." Article did state that UNC has yet to offer him.

Because they are UNC.

Once again, they have too many PGs for him to go there IMO and others'. Wish he said Wake was his leader considering his parents are still incredibly high on Wake (was told they'd like him to commit ASAP).
