Bracketology 2017

Having Cal in over us completely baffles me. Syracuse and Marquette just piss me off.

Syracuse beat us 81-76. Syracuse just beat Duke 78-75. Syracuse won @ Clemson 82-81. Syracuse beat UVa 66-62. Syracuse beat FSU 82-72. Syracuse beat Miami 70-55. They are 9-8 in the ACC & 17-13 overall while we are 7-9 and 16-12 so what is there to be pissed off about? Marquette on the other hand has just beaten Villanova 74-72 & Creighton 102-94, plus Xavier 83-61. They also get beat by also rans. They are 8-8 in the Big East & 17-11 overall. So they are marginal. Again nothing to be pissed off about. We just have to win and take care of ourselves. Win and beat Louisville and VT and we won't have to worry!

Sure but if you're playing this game, you also have to play the flip side of it:

Syracuse lost to 86th Connecticut, 60th Georgetown (at home), 88th St. Johns (at home, by 33), 164th Boston College (by 15), 72nd Pittsburgh, and 77th Georgia Tech.

Those are six losses all at least 20 spots worse than Wake's worst loss (to Syracuse).

Marquette also has losses to Georgetown, Pittsburgh, and St. Johns. At least their losses to the Hoyas and Red Storm were on the road though.

Syracuse has worse losses than Marquette does who you say has "losses to also rans."

Syracuse's biggest saving grace is that their losses were to schools named Connecticut, Georgetown, St. Johns, BC, Pitt, and Georgia Tech instead of:

College of Charleston, Princeton, Davidson, Samford, UT-Arlington, and Monmouth - all schools within one or two spots in KenPom of the six losses above.

If they had lost to those six teams, which is entirely possible if they had played on the same day as Syracuse suffered their losses above, Syracuse's resume suddenly looks worse even though in reality it wouldn't be any different at all.

Syracuse and Marquette have atrocious RPIs (Syracuse's would be the worst ever, beating their record from last year). It's ludicrous that 3 top 25 wins can make up 30 + spots in the RPI. You can't say RPI top 25 or top 50 wins are the end all be all and then turn around and say that RPI doesn't matter.

Cuse has a shitty RPI, a bunch of bad losses, a soft non conference schedule and only 2 wins away from the Carrier Dome. The only thing they have going for them is quality wins. If that's all that matters though then GT, Indiana, and Georgetown should all be in as well.

G'town has wins over Oregon, Creighton and Butler (and Cuse and Marquette) under Reffs logic they should be in too.

Wake Forest computer rankings, record vs top 50 and strength of schedule as of this morning.

Kenpom: 33...1-11...15
BPI: 33...1-12...9
Sagarin: 38...1-12...19
RPI: 45...1-9...24

Wake is the third team out on the updated Bracket Matrix, but the second team out (Kansas State) is in fewer brackets updated after this weekend than Wake is in so it's likely that Wake will pass them shortly. They also play the fourth team out (TCU) on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Vandy is the last team in the bracket and have probably the toughest finish in the country coming up against Kentucky and Florida. Two losses there will knock them down below Wake if Wake goes 1-1 I believe.

Gotta look at all these scenarios through the lens of "they are going to field a full 68 team field." Looking at Wake and saying "win only 18 games and we're out" or "win 19 games and we're definitely in" ignores the constant state of flux around the bracket picture - heavily dependent upon the other teams on the bubble. If Wake goes 1-1 and everyone around us goes 0-2 (just as an example), I think lots on here would still say "well losing that game to (insert Louisville or VPI) doomed us, here we come NIT" when in reality our stock could have risen relative to others on the bubble.

Ridiculous. Wake is a fun team to watch. We run, score a lot of points and get exciting dunks. If it's about entertainment value, we'd be in for sure.

Damn right. That article lost any credibility when it painted us as an unexciting team to watch.

Wake also played a considerably harder OOC schedule than Rhode Island cutting against their coaches argument on that front.

He makes a blanket statement in favor of mid majors while saying we shouldnt make blanket statements about big time schools.

Comparable OOCs according to the non-Kenpom numbers the committee uses. Rhody and MTSU did challenge themselves in the non-con which is a nice resume element for each

Yeah, that was ridiculously biased article. What, are we supposed to feel sorry for Belmont at UT-Arlington for being left out because George Washington made a run 11 years ago, or the occasional Butler/Witchita run? Just doesn't work that way. RPI/KP/BPI are still used as measureables for a reason...Let's hope the committee doesn't let a shitty MAAC team in because of #feelings.

Hey SI wanna chill with the video sidebar that follows me as I try to read your article?

Clearly we are all biased, but we have one of the best players in the country on our team, get up and down the court, and are really good on offense.

Basically we have the same team make up as UCLA from an offense and defense standpoint and everybody loves to watch them.

MTSU played VCU, Vandy, Ole Miss and UNC-W. They played two dregs of P5 conferences.
