I think the key going forward may be to find a young assistant coach and give him his shot. Loyalty seems to be the key. It's why Shaka is staying. It's why Archie may stay (State job aside). It's why a lot of mid-major coaches settle down. Loyalty.

I'd rather go for a young, untested assistant with upside rather than a retread at this point.

Found this article from SI on the top assistant coaches:

Here is a list of assistants under 40 from 2 years ago. Three are off the list already, one is in the Final Four. Another name is very familiar.

I have no clue. I'm against it, though. I agree with your point, but most of these guys fail -- and the successes are typically guys who are promoted from within (where the school already knows exactly what the assistant is and isn't doing).

Number one on that list is Orlando Antigua from Kentucky. When I was a freshman at wake, I met Antigua on his official visit on Halloween night. He signed with Pittsburgh a few days later. I'm ohfer closing the deal with recruits.

I'm interested in a more thorough breakdown of who succeeds and why. Obviously Ollie is an example of your point. Archie and Shaka aren't.

Plenty of retreads fail, too. The list of coaches with "good" experience who will take this job may be getting shorter. At some point, it's retread with mediocre experience vs. assistant with upside.

If we went this route, how could we go with anyone other than Fuller? I'd be much happier with Fuller than many of the names being thrown around.
