My guess is he was told Lobo had to go. He realized he was near the end of his career anyway, didn't want to fire his friend and family member out of loyalty, and consequently fell on the sword.
That just doesn't add up to me, as Lobo would be gone no matter what in that scenario. Grobe's best chance of keeping Lobo employed would be to call and see if Wellman was bluffing.
