NBA Off-season thread: Duncan and Garnett retire

The max contract doesn't make sense any more. How does a good player like Noah deserve the same contract as a great player like LeBron or Durant?

Because the Knicks can afford it.

That's just how it is. The best player on a bad team is going to get paid as much as the best player on the championship team eventually.

Because owners and GMs are pussies. The could easily say Max means superstar and effectively setup a pay scale, but they are afraid to do so.

Nope. A GM could just say, "bmoney is our best player. You aren't as good as he is. Youdon't paid as much."

What does this even mean? There aren't 30 superstars in the league, but there are 30 teams, which have different front office styles but adhere to similar cap norms. In this case, some guys will be paid by superstars when they're not particularly deserving because there are teams willing to pay for them when they can't attract legitimate superstars. This has always been the status quo in the NBA, albeit with different cap/CBA situations.

That's not true. You can't win regular season MVP when you join a super team with Bosh and Wade and don't even finish first in the eastern conference, and another guy takes a team that people are now saying wasn't that good to the best record in the league. This is what I'm talking about when I say people have completely forgotten how good D Rose really was.

Nah. D Rose has always been overrated. He won because his team finished first, Lebron had a down year for him, and people were pissed about the Decision. Lebron still had the best individual season that year by a comfortable margin and his team only finished four games back.

Right. And another way to look at it is that good players deserve to get paid the max and the great players deserve to get paid more. Most great players supplement their income through deals and endorsement in ways good players often can't.

All signs point to the Bulls sitting out any pursuit of big fish this offseason, show they have a strong core with Butler and good role players this season, then go big next offseason. Probably a smart move but it's not as much fun as a fan.

Gunning for that late lotto spot!

That's not very hard to understand. If you aren't a superstar, you should be paid like one.

I have no problem with overpaying some players. Second level franchises will have to in order attract certain guys.

There shouldn't be a default to paying max as is happening. In fact, teams can be stronger by not defaulting to max or near max. By not wasting as much money on average players (like Barnes), you can entice more good players to come to your team.

NEW RUMOR- Clippers are trying to move DJ to get enough money to sign Durant. A Big 3 of CP3, Blake, KD and being in LA. Does this move the Clippers into the top echelon?

Yeah, but markets are markets and behave like markets behave.

I wanted them to let DAJ walk to Dallas last year.

$18mm a year isn't even close to the max or what LeBron or Durant will get.

If they can keep Aldrich and Redick then maybe. Especially if Johnson or Stone can give them minutes next year. Their defense would suffer but their offense would be absurd.
