Republicans for POTUS, 2016 Edition

This is an interest point. As the Republican candidates destroy each other to win the nomination, who is the winner going to pick as a VP?

Martinez or Haley.

Mary Fallon, Kelly Ayotte, Kasich, Rubio, or Walker might also work for the GOP nominee. Trump's scorched earth campaign has left him with only bad chioices: Palin, Cruz, Carson, or Mike Lee. Cruz or Lee would be a tacit secession of the Tea Party from the GOP, which would be good for everybody.

Part of the NYT editorial on Trump from yesterday.

They say he’s trashing the Republic brand. They say he’s “stirring up the crazies,” in the words of Senator John McCain. But Trump is the brand, to a sizable degree. And the crazies have long flourished in the Republican media wing, where any amount of gaseous buffoonery goes unchallenged.

And now that the party can’t control him, Trump threatens to destroy its chances if he doesn’t get his way, running as an independent with unlimited wealth — a political suicide bomb.

Trump is a byproduct of all the toxic elements Republicans have thrown into their brew over the last decade or so — from birtherism to race-based hatred of immigrants, from nihilists who shut down government to elected officials who shout “You lie!” at their commander in chief.

It was fine when all this crossing-of-the-line was directed at President Obama or other Democrats. But now that the ugliness is intramural, Trump has forced party leaders to decry something they have not only tolerated, but encouraged.

Trump is a habitual line stepper.

A Trump that wins the nomination will have no problem picking a VP nominee. He would have done it with plenty of support and Pubs are deluded enough to believe whoever they back will win.

Still can't see a scenario where Trump wins the GOP nomination. OTOH, didn't think he would run at all and thought he would drop out before filling out financial disclosures. Now curious if and how many years of tax returns he'll release. Also curious if he ever releases his college transcripts since he hounded Obama about that and has claimed he was a brilliant student. Am very skeptical that anyone who mixed it up with the birthers is super sharp. 20% among 16 candidates doesn't necessarily grow to 40-50% in a narrow field.

In head to head polling, Trump loses to HRC by nearly 20 points. Margins are different in a three way race, but that scenario is an even higher probability of a Hillary win. Still assuming Trump runs as an independent and therefore has a limited pick of VP candidates.

Edit: after reading FMR's post, I'm dying to know who will be Trump's VP candidate.

I don't think he can win the nomination either but then again I never thought that Jesse Ventura ( a wrestler for those of you not in the know) would be governor of Minnesota either. Here's the thing with Trump and his supporters, according to the latest polls he leads with like 24-28% support. If he crashes and burns, that 24-28% does not automatically go to either Bush or Walker but either to another "crazy" or to Trump if he goes 3rd party. Trump going 3rd party with say 25% pub support and 10-15% of support from another group(s) could make things more interesting than HRC would want.

How else would Trump pick a VP candidate?

The Apprentice - VP Edition

Think of the ratings!

Damn. That's Trump's end game. Pull out of the race, Apprentice VP, essentially pick Bush's VP choice via national television, remain relevant, ego intact, get richer.

Hillary is praying that Trump runs third. She'd win 40+ states.

It's posted on the Dem thread as well, but Sanders leads Walker and Trump (by 21% lol) while only trailing Bush by one in a poll of registered voters who would you vote for in the presidential election between the two.

Sanders is basically running unchallenged right now because HRC doesn't want to piss off the left wing of the party. However, if he were to win the nomination (he won't) he would get slaughtered in the general. Like it or not, a self diatribes "democrat-socialist" would have a hard time winning 5 states let alone enough to win the Presidency.

Hillary's people have assessed her likability, and that's why she's hard to find in public these days. They must be doing backflips over Trump.
