Republicans for POTUS, 2016 Edition

http://abc7ny.com/news/trump-again-says-he-saw-cheering-in-nj-on-9-11-/1095063/

Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump defended comments he made Saturday saying he saw thousands of people in Jersey City, New Jersey cheering when the World Trade Center was destroyed on September 11, 2001.

"There were people that were cheering on the other side of New Jersey where you have large Arab populations," he told George Stephanopoulos today on ABC's "This Week." "They were cheering as the World Trade Center came down. I know it might be not politically correct for you to talk about it, but there were people cheering as that building came down -- as those buildings came down, and that tells you something. It was well covered at the time."

If we are not monitoring and in some cases infiltrating the more radical mosques then the NSA/Homeland Security are just being negligent. It's not like we don't have any idea where to start looking.

There is a huge difference between this and putting all Muslims on a list and shutting down mosques.

Trump's lying from behind. He should follow Cruz (switched from classic rock to country after 9/11) or Carson (hid white kids during riots) whose stories can't be disproven. Trump's claims about his people in Hawaii finding out big things about Obama's phony birth certificate was a much safer lie. Like HRC and sniper fire on the tarmac or Ryan's sub three hour marathon, it will be easy to reach a definitive conclusion on whether thousands of people in Jersey City were cheering on 9/11. Has no effect on his poll numbers, but Trump is sloppy with his lies. If he truly were a great student at Wharton, he would have graduated with honors. Just follow evangelical darlings Cruz and Carson who never leave a trail.

You know it is bad for Ben Carson when even Rush Limbaugh comes out and says you aren't qualified to be President.

Looks like next debate will have nine participants, including Christie. Trump has leads in all the early states and wants a large debate field so he won't be asked too many questions or asked for specific details. There isn't any TV footage of thousands of Muslims celebrating in Jersey City, but even Christie refuses to aggressively go after Trump on a boldfaced lie. Poor meek mannerly Christie has been neutered.

Get that trying to understand Trump supporters is rough, but what's the upside to the 9/11 Jersey City story? There's plenty of footage of Trump from the '80s, but somehow a vast bipartisan government and media conspiracy removed all evidence from the Internet and destroyed videos. If Trump's telling the truth, having thousands and thousands of Muslims celebrating 9/11 directly across the Hudson from the WTC is ideal?!? Lose/lose.

Get why Carson's support is falling since his base is evangelicals and he's fabricated parts of his biography. Trump was clearly FOS about the birthers, but apparently Trump supporters don't care whatever he says as long as it's non-PC and pisses everyone else off.

Carson is now saying that he too saw the news coverage of American Muslims cheering 9/11, in case anyone needed confirmation that the story is BS.

Two WSJ articles on Trump.

GOP Operative Plans ‘Guerrilla Campaign’ Against Donald Trump

A well-connected GOP operative is planning a “guerrilla campaign” backed by secret donors to “defeat and destroy” the celebrity businessman’s candidacy, according to a memo reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

This one compares Trump's run to Perot's and George Wallace's 1968 run:

Why Donald Trump Survives the Waves He Makes

Mr. Wallace appealed to a significant chunk of Americans who believed the country had changed in ways they found disturbing. They were unsettled by both the civil-rights movement and anti-Vietnam-War protests. Perhaps most important, they felt their concerns weren’t being taken seriously by the political establishment, intellectual leaders, or the press.

Ultimately, both Messrs. Wallace and Perot found the limits of such populist sentiments. Mr. Wallace won 14% of the vote in 1968, and Mr. Perot 19% in 1992.

Similarly, it’s worth keeping the Trump phenomenon in perspective. As Mr. McInturff reminded the CEO Council audience, only about 16% of Americans are Republican primary voters. So if a candidate is winning 25% of that audience, as Mr. Trump is roughly doing now, that adds up to just 4% of Americans. In other words, there is a long way to go in determining how much impact all this will have.

Think it's conceivable that there were some Muslims celebrating some places in America, but thousands and thousands of people celebrating in the metro NYC area would have been a powder keg and a huge story. Trump will never back down, but amazing Carson would somehow support Trump, and that the other 'Pub wannabes are terrified of Trump and can't find a way to expose a blatent lie. Brian Williams never produced a piece of the destroyed helicopter from OBL's compound and nobody from Carson's childhood has backed up his stories. Unless Trump and Carson have footage, they need to steer clear from this bogus story.

I still don't think Trump wants to win this election, and I don't think he thinks he can win it. I do think he is starting to believe he can win the nomination, but that's it. That keeps him in the limelight the longest (without winning the whole thing).

I played golf this weekend with two die hard, above-average-intelligence-having Republicans. Both had decided to "Give Trump a Chance." Just because the rest of the nominees were so terrible. They are both distraught by the fact that Hillary is likely going to win, but have decided that the GOP needs to blow itself up sooner rather than later. They hate Jeb. Like Kasich OK, but recognize he is not gaining traction. Despise Carson. Could maybe deal with Rubio or Cruz, but don't think either can win, and think they delay the inevitable (meaning they would have decent enough showings against Hillary that the GOP would simply try again in 4 years). They are completely into the notion that a non-politician is the only chance for either 2016 or 2020, and that means Trump in 2016, for better or worse.

Think that Trump thought running for President would be good for his brand, but never had any real interest in being President. Probably shocked at the initial commercial pushback, but also that he easily moved to the top of the polls. Relishes trashing others and can't stand to lose, but can't find a way out. Won't sabatoge his own campaign but also can't stomach a loss.

Clearly hates Jeb and Rubio. Can't believe he trailed Carson anywhere at any point. Gotta be pissed that he may end up clearing the field for Cruz. No way Trump runs third party since he can't win and would take too much crap for damaging the eventual 'Pub nominee and handing the election to HRC. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Palin's, Bachmann's, and Carson's shaky grasp of American history is troubling, but they misinterpreted events long before they were born. It's not like 9/11 happened in Chicago or LA where Trump never lived. He was 55 on 9/11 and would know what a mess would have ensued had thousands celebrated anywhere within the Tri State Area. Carson apologized and admitted that he confused footage from the Middle East with Trump's comments. Lots of people saw that Middle East footage, but Trump would rather make an outrageous claim on his own turf than simply acknowledge a mistake.

Trump's older than Mitt and was 15 when Obama was born. Extremely hard to believe he thought a mixed race couple would fake a birth certificate to keep their biracial child's presidential prospects at a time when they couldn't even be legally married in more than a dozen states. Mitt's classmates readily recalled forcibly cutting a long haired kid's hair when they were roughly the same age as Trump was when Obana was born. It's not like Trump and Mitt only read about that era in textbooks with no personal context. Just admit a mistake and move on, but Trump demands an apology.

People like this would rather put an unqualified maniac in the most powerful position on the planet so their party can be in power than put someone who does have the resume in the office. The politics of this country are stupid.

He's been stuck in his Thomas Dolby phase for the last 30 years.

Trump allegedly bashed Carson for backtracking on an earlier claim about having seen "news reels" about Jersey City celebrations. Trump claimed Carson's "pathological disease" flared up again. Cruz and Rubio are the threats to Trump now not Carson.

Trump moved off the birther claim and talking about McCain being a hero because he was captured, so it seems bizarre that Trump is choosing to die on this hill. The footage isn't there. Why fight this battle now?

These guys grew up in an era where you could say anything and it would take a while to fact check it. Now with the internet providing almost instantaneous feedback a lot of them are struggling to adjust to the pushback of being proven wrong within 24 hours.
