Retired US Soccer / World Cup Thread (RIP)

Feel really bad for Messi esp after missing that penalty. Maybe there is something to the theory of his lack of Argie success has to to with no Xavi/Iniesta behind him.

Doesn't help that Maria always gets injured by the final, usually Kun does too or is out of form after recovering from an injury, and Higuain is a huge choker. Messi has to make up for Argentina's lack of creativity in the midfield and then his forwards in front of him are always shitting the bed one way or another. Also lack of success is a stretch, has dragged them to 3 straight finals

So Messi quits international play now? Seems like a baby

Also, why don't people give CR the same grief when Portugal always kinda sucks

Because the British media control soccer opinion to a large extent and cristiano is their boy because he played in England

Rumors of Sergio Aguero, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Angel Di Maria, Ever Banega and Lucas Biglia all retiring from the Argentina National Team. And Messi and Mascherano. Sounds like a shitshow. From Twitter:
AFA:
- No president
- No idea how next season's Primera will be
- Hawk nat'l team around for $
- Might be about to be deaffiliated from FIFA

In VERY simple terms (because Twitter, and also because 2:06am), those are the main issues pissing national team players off at present.

@roynemer also a good argentine football follow. Also all of Argentina is pissed that Higuain isn't among those quitting

ESPN is reporting that Higuain is one of the 8 retiring from Argentina. Feels a bit like a revolt vs the AFA.

Hope they get it all sorted out and get everyone happy again in the next 2 years. That group still has a good run left in them in 2018 if they all come back and stay healthy

A bit of a revolt? AFA is an unmitigated disaster. FIFA just took over their FA with an emergency panel, their president was arrested for fraud during the tournament ... it's a complete and utter train wreck of epic proportions.

Even if it's the right move to cut ties with a poorly-managed and corrupt operation, doing so immediately after losing the championship is a bad look.

True. I would imagine the shitshow that the FA was during the tournament didn't help, and several of the players were lashing out in anger/frustration. They are the face of a terrible organization that has left them out to dry the last few years.

My guess is most of them (Messi included) are back in the fold before the WC.

Yeah...well there aren't a lot of teams that consistently play well against teams that are better than them. If they did, then those teams wouldn't be better than them

I missed where I said we should "consistently" beat better opposition. And we play so few marquee opponents that we don't even need to do it "consistently."

But it won't happen with the way JK has us playing against the big bois
