Wake Forest students roll the quad to celebrate basketball coach's firing
Wake Forest coach Jeff [Redacted] resigned on Thursday after going 51-76 in four seasons at the one-time ACC power, including a mind-boggling 2-32 conference road record. When the news was announced, students in Winston-Salem celebrated like they do the big victories that were mostly absent during [Redacted]’s reign. They took the toilet paper out of storage closets and bathrooms, went outside and rolled the quad
When told of the rolling of the quad, Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman said “we have passionate students.”
A large chunk of the Wake fanbase has been anti-[Redacted] since the day he was hired by his pal, Wellman, to replace Dino Gaudio in 2010. He didn’t have great success at his last college stop in Colorado and a loss to Stetson in his first game only emboldened the doubters. Throughout the 2012-13 season, there were “fire [Redacted]” billboards put up around the Triad. Wake fans took out ads in the school newspaper and paid for a front-page ad in the Greensboro News & Record advocating his ousting. Another billboard went up in Winston-Salem near the end of this season.
Relieved frustration or not, dancing on someone’s grave is always uncouth though. [Redacted] failed in his attempt to keep Wake competitive in the ACC, but he’s a good man with a family. He’s been a fine representative of the university. There weren’t many wins when he was around but there also weren’t any of the embarrassing incidents that checkered the tenure of Dino Gaudio.
Still, unless you can say you made it through your college experience without ever doing something that looks bad in retrospect, save the lectures to the students of Wake Forest. They attend a basketball school that hasn’t been competitive in basketball since the day they arrived on campus. Uncouth though they may be, they’re due for a little celebration.
