The ACC lost one Buzz on Thursday and replaced him with a new one a day later.
Virginia Tech’s hiring of Marquette coach Buzz Williams to a seven-year, $18 million contract is a major upgrade from the recently fired James Johnson, who compiled a 22-41 record (6-30 ACC) in his two seasons with the Hokies.
The energetic 41-year-old Williams, by contrast, was 139-65 with Marquette while taking the Eagles to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament in 2013.
As exciting as the news of Williams’ hiring is for the folks at Tech and a conference in desperate need of an influx of coaching talent, it’s probably the last thing Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman wanted to see as he embarks on a coaching search of his own.
Wellman was already under pressure from an angry, impatient fan base to bring in a quality replacement for the wildly unpopular Jeff [Redacted], who “resigned” on Thursday after four divisive seasons.
Now, with a neighboring ACC rival having landed such a high-profile new coach, the ante has been upped. Along with, almost certainly, the price tag.
Although it’s still too early in the process to identify who might be available, it’s almost certain that Wichita State’s Greg Marshall and VCU’s Shaka Smart – the two names at the top of most Deacon fan’s wish list – won’t be.
It will also be interesting to see if vitrol aimed at [Redacted] by a segment of Wake’s fan base will scare away any prospective candidates, the way it did at N.C. State when a similarly unpopular Herb Sendek left nearly a decade ago.
The so-called #buzzout faction at Wake spent better part of the past two years taking out newspaper ads and highway billboards to voice their public displeasure in their team’s now-former coach. Thursday, when [Redacted]’s “resignation” was announced, the news was greeted by a “rolling of the Quad” – a celebration usually reserved for big Deacon football and basketball victories.
Wellman has given no timetable for hiring a new coach.
