Women's Hoops

If you haven't seen the women play, you should. They are fundamentally sound...they call ball screens & switches, play defense by moving their feet, and take good shots. They hustle. They have a HC and a staff who fights for them during the game. It's a refreshing change from the product the men's team has put on the floor since 1/10/16.

They play #2 Notre Dame on Thursday. A win would be miraculous since Notre Dame is just so much better in all aspects of the game. Still, I suspect the Lady Deacs will out up a good fight. Amber Campbell & Ariel Stevenson are worth watching.

They'll lose to ND, but they've got a great chance to win the last 2 and finish .500 in the league, which would be awesome considering the injuries they've had this year and the lack of tradition with that program.

So I'll ask the obvious question: Can Hoover coach the men's team too?

it would be nice if the WS journal did an article on the lady deacs as this level of success they are having is unprecedented for WFU women's basketball. It would be much more enjoyable than reading about defeat after defeat of Manning's crew.

Looks like Disco reads the boards as a nice article coming out in tomorrow's journal on the girls

The ladies took it on the chin from the Irish last night, but ND might be the only team in the country that can play with UConn, so to say they were overmatched is an understatement. Hopefully they regroup, get the last 2 ACC games, and get a win or 2 in the ACC tourney.

For whatever reason, the WF women have always seemed to play their best ball in the ACC tourney. Given that and the team has played better lately, a mini tourney run is possible. Agree that ND is on another level.

Women's basketball in and of itself is in a no-win situation.

There is ONE (1) team in the country that blows EVERYONE out, along with 3 or 4 squads that blow everyone else out. Zero parity. Hard to get behind a sport like that. Good for the girls for winning - proud of them for that at least - but one just cannot take women's basketball seriously.

I agree the dominance by mostly one program in women's hoops takes a lot away from the appeal of it. The thing I've enjoyed the few times I've watched them play this year, is they play really hard and pretty smart. In other words, they exactly opposite as our men's team.

Agreed - that's very admirable.

Yeah I can't get into women's basketball because 99.5% of the teams have absolutely no shot whatsoever to win the title and most don't even have a realistic shot of upsetting a top five team. Wake could play Uconn a 1000 times this year and might not win a game - and that's not really even hyperbole.

Again, according to Sagarin UConn would be favored by double digits on the road against every other team in the country. They would be 45 point favorites against Wake on a neutral court. They would also be 86 point favorites against the worst team in the country - MSVU. I actually think that's low.

The difference on the men's side between the number one team and the 120th (roughly where Wake is in women) is 18 points.

LOL socialists.

The women beat Clemson by 15 in the first round of the ACC tourney today.

Could be wrong, but I think that, for as traditionally weak the women's basketball program has been, WF has a history of winning at least a game in the ACC tourney for awhile. Today's win clinched a winning record for the Lady Deacs for the season. Not sure if they would be in line for women's NIT (yes, there is a women's NIT) bid. WF plays GT today; GT beat WF by 15 to end the regular season.

Correct. I looked and it appears we've won at least 1 game in the ACC tournament every year since 08.

Wake lost to GT by two after leading much of the game. 21 turnovers probably didn't aid the cause.

GT hit a ton of 3s in third and fourth Qs, most of which were uncovered. Also out rebounded Wake and drove to the basket more resulting in a lot more foul shots for GT. I thought the Wake women looked a lot better than the men in displaying better fundamentals and offense (at least for 3.5 Qs). Hopefully, they are even better next year.

Rodney Rogers daughter hit the game winner for GT. Ouch.

Ouch indeed.

Another good tourney performance, though. Seems like the women always lose by razor-thin margins in the tourney. A trend that goes back many years. Need to see more improvement and a move up in the ACC standings next year.
