Ongoing gun violence/injury thread

I earned my Eagle Scout award in Troop 955 of Wake Forest Baptist Church, and between those older and younger than me, five of us who were faculty children served at some point, or still may do so, four Army, one Marine.

that's cool, i was in troop 919 and we had/have our own scout hut out in pfafftown. we were pretty lucky to have our own building. during our meetings we used to spend the first hour playing ultimate frisbee across from WCCC..hell sometimes i'd be wearing my b-ball shirt (they didn't make us wear class a all the time--laid back leadership).

yes i am a pacifist. but my dad was drafted in vietnam, both grandfathers fought ww2, my brother was in the air force (he joined for the right reasons), and i have a very close, and very ignorant friend, who volunteered to go "kill towel heads" thinking that was in our countries national security interests.

what does your god think about killing by the way? how do you jive your religious beliefs with the overarching purpose of the armed services?

during the revolution of 1800 adams peacefully turned the presidency over to jefferson. as the first peaceful power change EVER, this is inarguably the finest moment in human history, and it happened because militias didn't get involved. otoh this country is also inarguably responsible for the worst two moments in human history, the nuclear bombings of hiroshima and nagasaki.

there is no room for standing armies going forward if humans want to have any chance at long term survival and progress.

The US should have let Hitler just do his thing, would have worked out better for everyone right?

pacifism is an ideal. sort of like getting to absolute zero or the speed of light, it's never gonna happen fully. but we can do at lot to get there as nations via mutual disarmament. if we had already done that by 1940, there wouldn't have been a world war because there wouldn't have been weapons to fight with.

since there were weapons, I'd say it's one thing to get drafted and reluctantly take up arms to defend your country or a necessary ally from being occupied, it's another to voluntarily ship out to an overseas war of aggression conducted solely by the US.

Doubt it. Bloomberg's MAIG bus tour has been met at stops by far more gun rights proponents than on the gun controller side. Seems that adding the name of one of the Boston bombers to the "gun violence victim list" came back to bite that group. So did adding people who decided to have a shootout with police.

Funny, IL just went shall issue for concealed carry, overriding Quinn's veto. That makes four states Constitutional carry, 38 shall issue, and eight may issue. Before the IL ruling, something like 56% of the population lived in states that are Constitutional or shall issue, how much does IL up that percentage?

And 41 states are considering voter suppression laws. Your premise doesn't hold water.

I made a mistake, AR is now Constitutional carry, which makes 5, and 37 states are shall issue.

What premise are you referring to?

For those of us not steeped in second amendment fundamentalism, WTF is "constitutional carry"?

That's so ridiculous. You don't need to carry a gun to go to the grocery store or to McDonald's or to the local park.

Vermont, Wyoming, and Arkansas are constitutional carry and open carry. Why are the other two states not open carry and is there a preference among gun owners for open carry vs conceal carry?

You gotta pack your musket, dog.

Original constitution. Original arms. You can draw up another amendment for your flamethrowers and such.

My personal preference is concealed carry. I don't like the idea of open carry.

Same for your typewriters and computers and internet and such.

I just checked my Pocket Constitution. Typewriters, computers, and internet are not mentioned in the Constitution. Arms are mention in the 2nd Amendment.

I hope it's an elaborate troll. I think he's just a guy who really loves his guns.

I have never been able to understand the intellectual underpinnings of originalism. In practice it's a lot like biblical fundamentalism. Everything must be followed literally until inconvenient for the interpreter, then an excuse is conveniently found for why that section doesn't mean what it says.

Not only are Originalism's intellectual underpinnings cogent, I would argue that Originalism is the only hermeneutic that is consistent with the point of having a written constitution in the first place. Any other interpretive method--pragmatism, libertarianism, liberalism, etc.--subverts constitutional principles for those called for by the method itself. In this way, all other interpretive methods are, at some level, themselves unconstitutional.

So, how is it the only hermeneutic, then? Isn't that an oxymoron?
