You've got to remember: The world of a rube is very black and white.
 
 
Mueller hasn't leaked a single document or secret since the special counsel's investigation began, right? Why do reporters think he would start now?
 
I doubt any reporters genuinely think Mueller leaked them. They're just trying to avoid accusing Trump's team of the leak.
 
Because they're trying to remain impartial. Also, they probably have sources within the Trump administration and they don't want to jeopardize those sources by claiming without specific evidence that the NYT has sources within the Trump administration.
