This has always been one of my favorite annual threads... Usually posted by OldGoldBeard sometime in March, but because he hasn't posted since early January I figured I'd write it up this time. Original post is a work in progress, given players are still moving around.

Losses/returners had a 3.0 ppg minimum cut-off.
Newcomers include transfers (subject to the 3.0 ppg cut-off) and top-100 ESPN recruits.
Transfers are always the hardest to track, so corrections are welcomed, particularly on that front.
I’ve marked potential early-entries with an asterisk, and have categorized them as returners or losses based on whether they show up in the most recent ESPN Mock Draft (4/13).

*Adjusted GT to worse since Okogie is leaving. Syracuse better.

Teams That Should Be Better

Virginia Tech 21-12 (10-8), First Round loss in NCAA
Returners: Justin Robinson (14.0 ppg, 5.6 apg); Kerry Blackshear Jr. (12.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg); Nickeil Alexander-Walker (10.7 ppg, 3.8 rpg); Ahmed Hill (10.6 ppg, 3.0 rpg); Chris Clarke (8.2 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 3.0 apg); Ty Outlaw (6.3 ppg in 16-17); Khadim Sy (4.0 ppg in 16-17)
Losses: Justin Bibbs (13.3 ppg);
Newcomers: Landers Nolley (SF, #89)
Only losing Bibbs and bringing back Outlaw (injury) and Sy (temporary insanity) means VT will have high expectations for this season.

Syracuse 23-14 (8-10), Sweet Sixteen loss in NCAAs
Returners: Tyus Battle (19.2 ppg); Oshae Brissett (14.9 ppg, 8.8 rpg); Frank Howard (14.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 4.7 apg); Marek Dolezaj (5.8 ppg, 4.8 rpg); Paschal Chukwu (5.4 ppg, 6.8 rpg)
Losses: Matthew Moyer (3.2 ppg, 3.4 rpg)
Newcomers: Jalen Carey (SG; #36); Elijah Hughes (7.8 ppg - East Carolina)
Syracuse was supposed to suck last year, but Brissett came out of nowhere. With Battle coming back, they should be better.

Teams That Should Be About the Same

Virginia 31-3 (17-1), First Round loss in NCAAs
Returners: Kyle Guy (14.1 ppg); Ty Jerome (10.6 ppg; 3.1 rpg, 3.9 apg); De'Andre Hunter (9.2 ppg, 3.5 rpg); Mamadi Diakite (5.4 ppg, 3.0 rpg); Jack Salt (3.4 ppg, 4.0 rpg); Jay Huff (3.4 ppg)
Losses: Devon Hall (11.7 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 3.1 apg); Isaiah Wilkins (6.0 ppg, 6.2 rpg); Nigel Johnson (4.9 ppg)
Newcomers:
Hunter returning for another season is big. They aren't adding anyone new, but UVA should still be a very good team again.

Duke 29-8 (13-5), Elite Eight loss in NCAAs
Returners: Alex O'Connell (3.3 ppg); Marques Bolden (3.9 ppg, 3.6 rpg); Javin DeLaurier (3.4 ppg, 4.0 rpg)
Losses: Marvin Bagley III (21.0 ppg, 11.1 rpg); Grayson Allen (15.5 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 4.6 apg); Gary Trent Jr. (14.5 ppg, 4.2 rpg); Wendell Carter Jr. (13.5 ppg, 9.1 rpg); Trevon Duval (10.3 ppg, 5.6 apg)
Newcomers: RJ Barrett (SF, #1); Zion Williamson (PF, #2); Cam Reddish (SF, #3); Tre Jones (PG, #17)
It’s another exodus in Durham! Ridiculous recruiting class coming in, as usual.

UNC 26-11 (11-7), Second Round loss in NCAAs
Returners: Luke Maye (16.9 ppg, 10.1 rpg); Kenny Williams (11.4 ppg, 3.7 rpg); Cameron Johnson (12.4 ppg, 4.7 rpg); Sterling Manley (5.4 ppg, 3.6 rpg); Garrison Brooks (4.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg)
Losses: Joel Berry, II (17.1 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 3.2 apg); Theo Pinson (10.3 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 5.1 apg);
Newcomers: Nassir Little (SF, #6); Coby White (PG, #21); Rechon Black (SF, #48)
Assuming they keep Maye, the class they have coming in should be good enough to keep them near the top of the ACC. They might even improve.

NC State 21-12 (11-7), First Round loss in NCAAs
Returners: Torin Dorn (13.9 ppg, 6.3 rpg); Braxton Beverly (9.5 ppg, 3.9 apg); Markell Johnson (8.9 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 7.3 apg); Darius Hicks (4.3 ppg, 3.0 rpg)
Losses: Al Freeman (16.1 ppg, 4.2 rpg); Omer Yurtseven (13.5 ppg, 6.7 rpg); Lennard Freeman (7.9 ppg, 4.3 rpg); Sam Hunt (5.5 ppg), Abdul-Malik Abu (5.2 ppg, 3.4 rpg); Lavar Batts (3.7 ppg)
Newcomers: CJ Bryce (17.4 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 3.0 apg - UNCW); Devon Daniels (9.9 ppg, 4.6 rpg - Utah); Wyatt Walker (9.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg - 2 games with Samford); Immanuel Bates (C, #79)
Lots of turnover for NCSU this year, but the transfers they have coming in should contribute. Only 1 Top 100 recruit (Bates), but 2 others in the Top 150 (Steere & Hellems). Will be interesting to see what Keatts can do w/ more of "his" players in the fold.

Florida State 23-12 (9-9), Elite Eight loss in NCAAs
Returners: Phil Cofer (12.9 ppg, 5.1 rpg); Terance Mann (12.6 ppg, 5.4 rpg); Trent Forrest (7.8 ppg, 4.9 rpg); M.J. Walker (7.0 ppg); Mfiondu Kabengele (7.2 ppg, 4.6 rpg); PJ Savoy (6.7 ppg); Christ Koumadje (6.5 ppg, 4.1 rpg)
Losses: Braian Angola-Rodas (12.5 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 3.0 apg); C.J. Walker (8.0 ppg);
Newcomers:
FSU seems confident that Cofer will get a waiver for another year of eligibility (foot injury his sophomore year). They also redshirted a couple of freshman last year that were Top 200 in the 2017 class. No reason they can't return the NCAAs next season.

Notre Dame 21-15 (8-10), NIT
Returners: Temple Gibbs (15.3 ppg, 3.0 apg); Rex Pflueger (8.0 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 3.2 apg); John Mooney (5.6 ppg, 3.9 rpg); DJ Harvey (5.8 ppg)
Losses: Bonzie Colson (19.7 ppg, 10.1 rpg); Matt Farrell (16.3 ppg, 5.5 apg); Martinas Geben (11.1 ppg, 8.0 rpg)
Newcomers: Nate Laszewski (PF, #51); Dane Goodwin (SF #77); Robby Carmody (SF, #81); Prentiss Hubb (SG, #94)
In addition to the 4 Top 100 freshmen they are bringing in, Juwan Durham (transfer from UConn) is also eligible for them this year. Losing Colson and Farrell clearly hurts, but Brey has been able to quickly rebuild before (and with less). And, honestly, they weren't very good last year.

Wake Forest 11-20 (4-14)
Returners: Brandon Childress (9.1 ppg, 3.6 apg); Chaundee Brown (7.6 ppg, 3.0 rpg); Olivier Sarr (3.2 ppg, 3.0 rpg)
Losses: Bryant Crawford (16.9 ppg, 4.9 apg); Doral Moore (11.1 ppg, 9.3 rpg); Keyshawn Woods (11.9 ppg); Mitchell Wilbekin (8.6 ppg); Terrence Thompson (3.5 ppg, 3.9 rpg);
Newcomers: Jaylen Hoard (SF, #20); Isaiah Mucius (SF, #71); Ikenna Smart (3.6 ppg, 3.5 rpg - Buffalo); Torry Johnson (11.5 ppg - Northern Arizona)
Submitted without comment.

Pittsburgh 8-24 (0-18)
Returners: Jared Wilson-Frame (13.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg); Shamiel Stevenson (8.5 ppg, 4.4 rpg); Terrell Brown (4.4 ppg, 3.4 rpg); Khameron Davis (4.0 ppg);
Losses: Ryan Luther (12.7 ppg, 10.1 rpg); Marcus Carr (10.0 ppg, 4.0 apg); Parker Stewart (9.1 ppg, 3.3 rpg); Jonathan Milligan (5.0 ppg)
Newcomers: Trey McGowens (PG, #??? - Top 100 for 2019, but reclassifying to 2018); Malik Ellison (7.4 ppg, 3.3 rpg - St. John's)
I am sure I screwed this up because I can't tell who is staying and who is leaving. Feel free to help. They should finish last in the ACC again, but probably not 0-18.

Teams That Should Be Worse

Clemson 25-10 (11-7), Sweet Sixteen loss in NCAAs
Returners: Marcquise Reed (15.8 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 3.3 apg); Shelton Mitchell (12.2 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 3.6 apg); Elijah Thomas (10.7 ppg, 8.1 rpg); Aamir Simms (4.0 ppg, 3.2 rpg); David Skara (3.3 ppg)
Losses: Gave DeVoe (14.2 ppg; 4.7 rpg); Donte Grantham (14.2 ppg, 6.9 rpg); Mark Donnal (3.7 ppg)
Newcomers: Javan White (10.2 ppg, 9.0 rpg - Oral Roberts)
I hesitate to say that Clemson overachieved last season, but it'd be surprising to see them have the same level of success this year. Expectations are probably that they return the NCAAs, though.

Miami 22-10 (11-7), First Round loss in NCAA
Returners: Dewan Huell (11.4 ppg, 6.7 rpg); Chris Lykes (9.6 ppg); Dejan Vasiljevic (9.0 ppg); Anthony Lawrence, Jr. (8.8 ppg, 6.5 rpg); Evuka Izundu (5.0 ppg, 3.8 rpg); Sam Waardenburg (3.3 ppg)
Losses: Lonnie Walker (11.5 ppg); Bruce Brown (11.4 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 4.0 apg); Ja'Quan Newton (8.8 ppg)
Newcomers: Zach Johnson (16.1 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 3.0 apg - FGCU)
No idea how good Miami will be this year... Getting Zach Johnson as a grad transfer will help with scoring, but they are bringing in zero recruits for the 2018 class. They redshirted Deng Gak last year, but he probably won't be a huge factor. Kam McGusty transfers in from Oklahoma, but will have to sit out this season. Anthony Mack also transferred in from Wyoming... He's applying for a waiver to play right away since he did not play his freshman season at Wyoming.

Louisville 22-14 (9-9), NIT
Returners: V.J. King (8.6 ppg, 3.3 rpg); Ryan McMahon (6.1 ppg); Jordan Nwora (5.7 ppg); Dwayne Sutton (4.3 ppg, 4.0 rpg); Darius Perry (3.9 ppg); Malik Williams (3.8 ppg)
Losses: Deng Adel (15.0 ppg, 5.2 rpg); Ray Spalding (12.3 ppg, 8.7 rpg); Quentin Snider (12.4 ppg, 4.1 apg); Anas Mahmoud (6.8 ppg, 5.0 rpg)
Newcomers: Stephen Enoch (3.4 ppg - UConn)
I struggled with which category to but Louisville in... Perhaps "about the same" should have won out, but until they bring in another player or two, it looks like a worse roster. Chris Mack will likely ultimately end up as a good hire for Louisville, but they don't have any 2018 recruits coming in and are losing their top 3 scorers.

Boston College 19-16 (7-11), NIT
Returners: Ky Bowman (17.6 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 4.7 apg); Jordan Chatman (12.9 ppg); Nik Popovic (9.9 ppg, 6.2 rpg); Steffon Mitchell (6.4 ppg, 8.3 rpg)
Losses: Jerome Robinson (20.7 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 3.3 apg); Deontae Hawkins (12.4 ppg, 9.1 rpg - Medical Redshirt?)
Newcomers: Jairus Hamilton (SF, #55)
BC will likely take a step back next season. Getting a 6th season of eligibility for Hawkins would be huge (grad transfer that tore his ACL 8 games into last season).

Georgia Tech 13-19 (6-12)
Returners: Jose Alvarado (12.1 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 3.1 apg); Abdoulaye Gueye (5.9 ppg, 4.4 rpg); Brandon Alston (5.4 ppg); Curtis Haywood II (5.3 ppg); Moses Wright (4.6 ppg, 3.4 rpg); Evan Cole (3.2 ppg)
Losses: Josh Okogie (18.2 ppg, 6.3 rpg); Ben Lammers (11.7 ppg, 8.1 rpg); Tadric Jackson (12.7 ppg, 3.7 rpg);
Newcomers: Shembari Phillips (6.2 ppg, 3.1 rpg - Tennessee); Michael Devoe (PG, #42)
Things could be ugly given Okogie is officially gone. They also lost Lammers & Jackson to graduation. James Banks is transferring in from Texas, but won't be eligible until next season.

All I know is that Pitt will be last and Wake next to last

I didn't actually realize how much point production we lost until I read this

That Buzz Williams guy, though...

Yeah, that was one of the things that jumped out at me.

I was also surprised at how few "impact" freshmen were coming into the league next season, outside of Duke/UNC. Notre Dame has 4 Top 100 guys (led by a guy I was sad to see us miss on, Nate Laszewski)... But none are Top 50. And a couple of other schools have Top 50 guys, but not much else (Syracuse, Georgia Tech).

I'm also interested to see how Trey McGowens does for Pitt... He should get plenty of minutes, but I have to think a guy ranked in the ~80s for 2019 isn't going to come in and be nasty right away a year early.

That Buzz Williams guy, though...

I actually thought of you when I wrote Khadim Sy's name down... Means you won't be able to say that Buzz is winning games with only one guy over 6'6" on the roster anymore.

Yeah, but if people use the lack of big man/Doral's decision excuse next year, I may have to go to that line talking about what VT did "last" year...

Good stuff. Will need to be revisited when it's known who is headed to the NBA, who is headed back to college and who is getting grad transfers.

WF will be better next year, but WF will not be an NCAA tourney team. I know ND landed a solid recruiting class, but they were a mediocre team without Bonzie, and a bad team without Ferrell last year. Think the Irish will struggle. If BC loses Bowman and Robinson, they are going to suck; same with GT and Okogie. Miami loses a lot and that program is hurting from the DOJ investigation. Think the Canes are headed in the wrong direction.

Looks like UVA, UNC, Duke and maybe VT, will be the best by a lot and then State, FSU, Cuse and maybe L'ville will be decent. I see a lot of bad teams (for the ACC) next year.

Yeah, but we'll still have 6+ guys over 6'6"... Sarr, Okeke, Melo, Hoard, Mucius, Lorng (Smart?).

I do hope you'll find a way to bring it up.

As Pilchard alluded to, there is no reason why VT couldn't/shouldn't finish top 4 in the ACC next year.

Highly doubt Okogie comes back. Devoe looks like he will be terrific, but that won't be enough. GT is going to continue sucking.

To be fair, we should always be better.

We are counting on two freshmen to be big impact players next Season. If that doesn't happen we will be worse, if it does happen we still have zero bench. Think we might be slightly better if Crawford stays. If he leaves we are going to bad, real bad, like 11' bad possibly worse.

The Deacon Sports FB page is claiming Crawford is coming back for Senior year because this fella "heard it from a friend". take it FWIW.
