WFU Hoops: Roster Construction - +LaRavia/Taylor/Walton/Monsanto/Williams/Sy/Marsh

Jamarious Burton 6’4 jr pg Texas Tech from Charlotte

Choate doesn't produce many quality D1 basketball players, but JFK went there as did Michael Douglas and Glenn Close (before Glenn Close went crazy in Fatal Attraction), Paul Giamatti and Jamie Lee Curtis.

So maybe he can act like a D1 player?

Devin Askew (5 star guard HS Class 2020) who bombed out at KY is transferring to Texas. Wouldn't be surprised to see Askew (he was the #32 rated prospect in 2020 class) blossom under Chris Beard, just like Johnny Juzang was a nothing burger for KY in 2019, and then transformed into an NBA first round pick at UCLA under Mick Cronin. So funny how much talent KY wastes.

Juzang came on strong at the end of the 2020 season before Covid hit. He went home during the shutdown and realized how much he missed it. But he would not have had the season he did this year at UCLA no doubt. Askew is another story, he isn't that good and with all the transfers UK has coming in he was going to go from starting to not playing much. But to imply Kentucky wastes a lot of talent is not true. Most guys that transfer out don't blow up like Juzang did. At best they become good four year college players like Kyle Wiltjer or Charles Matthews. Where Kentucky "wastes" more talent is guys that go pro before they should.

OK, while I don't think that recruiting rankings are always definitive, this was the KY roster this past year:

FR. G Devin Askew: 5 star by 247, ESPN among others; rated #26 player in his class
FR. G Brandon Boston: consensus 5 star prospect; California HS athlete of the year; CA Mr. Basketball; first team McDonald's A-A
FR. G Terrence Clarke: consensus 5 star prospect #8 player in the nation for the rivals (has declared for the 2021 NBA draft)
GR Transfer Davion Mintz: Three year starter at Creighton considered one of the top 10 transfers in the 2020 transfer class
RS FR. G Dontae Allen: KY Mr. Basketball; 4 star; top 75 prospect from the 2019 HS class
SO F Keion Brooks: consensus 5 star recruit in 2019 class; rated #14 by 247, #29 by Rivals and #35 by ESPN in that class
FR. F Cam Fletcher: 4 star prospect; top 50 recruit; Missouri HS basketball POY
FR. F Isaiah Jackson: consensus 5 star prospect #28 player in the 2020 HS class; declared for the 2021 NBA draft
FR. F Lance Ware: NJ HS POY; 4 star prospect #36 rated player in the 2020 HS class
SO. F Jacob Toppin: Obi Toppin's brother; transfer from Rhode Island; rated as top 25 transfer
SR. C Olivier Sarr: #1 rated transfer C in 2020; 3rd team All-ACC in 2020;

This team, coached by the highest paid coach in college basketball, went 9-16 (8-9), including 0-4 against ACC teams. Could run through the same exercise with the 5 previous KY teams, most of whom had even more talent than the 2021 team, and none of them, made a Final 4; despite having the most highly rated talent in the country.

So, yes, that is a waste of talent.

Also, "Juzang came on strong at the end of the 2020 season before COVID hit"... Not really.

These are Johnny Juzang's last 8 games in KY uniform in 2020:

Feb. 11 Vandy: 10 minutes 2 points
Feb. 15 Ole Miss: 16 minutes 5 points
Feb. 18 LSU: 9 minutes 3 points
Feb. 22 FL : 10 minutes 0 points
Feb. 25 A&M: 6 minutes 0 points
Feb. 29 Auburn: 8 minutes 0 points
Mar. 3 TN: 16 minutes 6 points
March 7 FL: 33 minutes 10 points

8 games 26 points for a player that had as an impressive 2021 NCAA Tournament as any player. Waste of talent at KY. Yes.

I thought you were referring to "wasting talent" as Cal running guys off to other schools. Guys like Jemarl Baker, Marcus Lee and Quade Green that leave due to whatever reason. Mainly the knowledge that Cal is going to play the five star freshman over them because he thinks ultimately they will play through their mistakes and be the better player by season's end. This year that really bit him in the ass. BJ Boston and Terrance Clark just aren't that good. Jeff Goodman called it before they arrived at Kentucky and UK fans thought Goodman had some vendetta against Cal/UK. But he was right. Last year's team just wasn't that good, and a lot of it was because they didn't have a point guard. Askew reclassified and could have still been in high school.

And my Juzang comment was based on memory and how well he played the last game against Florida because Ashton Hagans was hurt and I was excited to see him as a sophomore. Still was, just not as a Wildcat.

And no doubt Cal has squandered more talent than anyone else this last decade. His first six years were amazing save for the loss to Wisconsin in 2015 final four.

After that, the magic kind of went away. But to be objective:

2017 - Lost in regional final on last second shot by Luke Maye in a game where they had some tough calls. They were the two best teams remaining in the tournament IMO. UK had beaten Carolina earlier that year on a last second shot by Monk. UNC goes on to win it all.

2018 - Lost in Sweet 16 to Kansas St by 3. PJ Washington had 18 and 15, but went 8-20 from the line. Would have played Loyola in the regional final.

2019 - Lost in OT to Auburn in regional final. Had chance to win in regulation but whiffed.

2020 - Had a team playing well at season's end and had good outside shooting and scoring. Was down like 20 on the road that last game at Florida and came back to win.

Cal plays a very outdated style, is stubborn and arrogant like most successful coaches, and is losing his grip in the recruiting circles. He's not the young cool dude anymore. And again, his style is as far from what the NBA is right now as you can get. Younger guys like Nate Oats are taking over. He should have at least 2 trophies with the teams he has had. There has been some bad luck but 12 years and one title with a once in a generation player is his legacy for now.

Massoud to announce at 12pm... Expectation is Kansas State.

pins & needles. ask for mr blue. i'll be in the corner holding my breath. dare i dream? tag: FingerCrossed

seriously though, best of luck. really excited for next year! Steve Fn Forbes!

K State seems like a good fit. They should be improved next year. Injuries caused K State to start 3 freshmen, and they got better as the season went on. They've already picked up two transfers including Mark Smith by way of Illinois and Mizzou. The Wildcats really struggled from 3 last year.

According to Jeff Goodman, only 3 of the 87 Power Conference Schools had no players enter the transfer portal:

- Michigan
- Bama
- UCLA

Also, Louisville's David Johnson heading to the NBA. He's been highly touted for the last couple of years, but never seemed like he was a difference-maker at L'ville.

Massoud to K State is official.

Current status of last season's Deacs in the portal:

Massoud: K State
Q. Adams: St. Bonnie
Okpomo: Temple
Wilkins: Longwood
Neath: TBD (seen him mentioned with Penn State)
Jalen Johnson: TBD
