Unsurprisingly, there are not many Thai, Indian, or Chinese people in Winston. Doesn't seem like there are many Germans, either.

Yeah, but there are a ton of Scots-Irish white people in town that there should be some sort of decent food readily available, outside of Chili's and Firebirds.

Agreed. Even a city the size of Charlotte lacks in those categories. We have coverage, but not tons of competition. Spent last week in San Francisco, so I've had my share of good Asian cuisine lately.

Honestly, the Greek mafia probably makes the restaurant scene hard to break into. I had friends who graduated high school and literally had the option from their families of college or a restaurant. The restaurant biz in Winston is absolutely dominated by Greek families.

there used to be a standalone Pho place but the folks who owned it have rolled it back into Downtown Thai, so I don't know if one page of pho (10 kinds) and Vietnamese dishes (4 kinds) counts.

Most people would laugh but Thai Sawatdee in the Cloverdale Harris Teeter is quite good. Not a nice dining experience, sitting in the produce section of a supermarket, but rather delicious food. Just take it to go.

And man, if there is better Indian than Nawab, I want it, all of it.

I  Nawab

Not sure why anyone would expect the Scots-Irish to eat anything besides Chili's, Firebirds, CookOut, and barbecue. But I don't understand them all that well.

Forgot about that place. Have only had takeout, so it's harder to judge. Seemed solid. Will need to check it out again. Based on the website, it looks like it could be in the running for good Sushi (presentation looks nice in the photos, some complex rolls, etc). How's the atmosphere? Is it a Japanese restaurant that serves sushi or is it a sushi restaurant?

I recommend you go try it. Presentation is very good. I am still pretty much a sushi n00b, but I would describe it as a sushi restaurant that also serves other Japanese food. It's pretty clear that Sushi is their staple. They have silly good lunch specials.

Sounds like Winston has a Sushi restaurant! It's on my list for my next trip.

Good Thai - Greensboro has Winston beat, and I can't help you with good Thai in Winston.

We've got a bunch of Thai restaurants, it just so happens that the best one is in a grocery store.

Good Indian - Nawab is as good as it gets in the South for northern Indian, Tumeric is as good as it gets in the South for southern Indian.

Good Chinese - Takeout is a struggle, but "real" Chinese is Sampan hands down. It's probably top 5 in North Carolina for authentic American-Chinese.

Really good Sushi is relative - Winston has a new place that isn't shit downtown near the courthouse, but you'd be fine at the place near Chuck-E-Cheese or Mizu. It's all just American cream cheese filled bullshit anyway.

We have the premier "German beer and sausage joint" in the Carolinas. Seriously, it's fucking insane. The Old Europe Restaurant. http://www.theoldeuroperestaurant.com/The_Old_Europe_Restaurant/Old_Europe_Restaurant.html

Mediterranean - half the restaurants in Winston are owned by Greeks. There are options available.

I think you need to get out more. I've been to Old Europe...that place is mediocre at best, and I've heard horror stories about the service.

You're right on Mediterranean as far as Ameri-Greek goes. I was thinking more along the lines of Middle Eastern/Arab style Med.

I've heard you can't use salt and pepper at Old Europe.

Tate Street Thai in Greensboro is tits for cheap, delicious Thai.

Taste of Thai on Battleground/A COCK is nice for a little more upscale (10 bucks a plate).

Thai Garden on Tate Street? That place IS money

There are TONS of Germans (Moravians) in the Winston area, just not recent immigrants to get the cuisine etc. like in Texas.

I would love a recommendation for a Beer/Sausage restaurant, sounds like you have some experience.

Where? CLT lacks here as well, but has a really solid option for traditional German in the Waldhorn. Personal favorite is my neighborhood pub, Growlers Pourhouse...basic beer and sausage place. Hand made pretzels, hand ground/stuffed sausages, excellent rotating craft beer selection including two cask options.

There was a decent Thai place behind the mall when I was at wake. I think it was called Royal Thai, but I think it has since closed.

10 Bucks for an app
45 Bucks for Entrees
16 bucks for bears for me
16 bucks for wine for wife

I recall that we had desert, some German chocolate cake thing. It was awesome. I think it was around 8 dollars.

That's 95 bucks without tax or tip.

Well sure, it's "easy" to spend $100 if you are having a 3 course dinner with 2-3 drinks each and buying some of the more expensive entrees on the menu...that's not quite the same as "easy as hell to spend $100.00 for two people." $100 is pretty damn cheap for app, two entrees, dessert and 6 drinks, even in Winston. You could probably spend $100 at Ruby Tuesday on a Saturday night with apps, drinks, dessert.

There you go. As a Greek who was born in Winston, this is 100% true. Literally all the restaurants we go to are greek owned, even some fast food restaurants. Goodies, My dad knows almost all the restaurant owners because they go to church together and give each other business. I can't tell you how much business his architecture business gets from greek restaurant owners in town.

I would say the Village Tavern, Milner's or Fabian's are my favorite places in town, but after living in Charleston since I was 11, Winston really does lack any variety at all, and none of those places would survive here. I don't know of more than 1 decent sushi place. I dont know any good Chinese places. All the japanese restaurants are just shitty hibachi. There isn't even a great greek place in town. Athena's isn't good at all, but the greeks go there to support them anyway - like my dad who hates the place but feels obligated. And Greek owned places are mostly around the same flavor.

Yeah, a good portion of my extended family is German/Moravian, but their immigration dates too far back to have preserved much of the food culture, even though they are still very much involved in the local Moravian culture.

Fabian's has always been at the top of my list, even without Fabian there any more. Spring House is also very good, and Milner's is usually good, with a couple entrees I really like. I've only been to Old Europe once, and that was not long after it opened. It was good enough (and the Apple Strudel was very good), but apparently one of the chefs was in the hospital, and I don't know what else was going on, but there was maybe one other party there and it took a good 45 minutes to get our food. They apologized several times, but it was still crazy. I would like to go back and try it some time, especially since they have lasted this long (I figured they'd be gone in a month). One place I've just started going in the past year or so that hasn't been mentioned is La Botana. Not high end or anything, but I really like the variety and I've always gotten good food from there.

ETA: 5 Points isn't bad either, and they have great cinnamon yeast rolls that they serve with brunch. Haven't been for dinner yet, though.
