Retired US Soccer / World Cup Thread (RIP)

Want to double our bet? I'm fairly positive that you and sd3 will be sending me money come the spring of next year.

I'll double that bet right now with you if you want. Bet on the USMNT against Mexico in this Hex. Please. Let your ignorant patriotism cost you money.

IIRC, my bet is with another poster and not you, dv7. Though I could easily be mistaken, I'll stand by both of them if the search function proves that is the case.

I for one do not think Wednesday will go well. Honduras have been on an absolute roll since the Olympics and it seems like that has become an even tougher place to play with them moving their games to the day.

A draw would be a fantastic result but I don't see us even getting that. Hope I'm wrong

We're catching a bit of a break with Najar and Emilio Izaguirre going injured this week. I'm skeptical as well, but we will be fielding a realitively young and energetic roster (chandler, Johnson, Cameron, Bradley, Jozy) I can see us very easily getting a result as well.

It's me against both you and Husky. I'll dig it up this afternoon.

Wait. What?!?!???

Yup. I've got three weeks off in March, so I'm gonna head down to Mexico and finish the trip at Azteca. Meeting up with 5 or 6 friends who are heading down as well. I've heard it should be a good away section.

That's pretty cool Husky. You'll def have to report back to us afterwards

I highly doubt Najar was going to play, or at least start.

We've won the last two times we've gone to Honduras (2001, 2009)

Awesome man. I highly considered the AO trip but I couldn't get the vacation days needed

I found the AO costs outrageous as usual. From what I can research, their costs break down as follows;

Ticket = $50
Security/Transportation to match = $125
Hotel = $160/night/person = $320
Transportation to AO Pregame Party = $20?
Round Trip Airport Transfers = $60?
Guide on buses = $10?

Total = $575 plus 3% surcharge for credit card/paypal.

Or you could do it on your own and get your choice of 5 star hotel 2 blocks from their hotel for $75/night/room. Or splurge for a penthouse with hot tub for $100/night/room.

The security/transportation to the match seems absurdly high as well. I know people who have gone before who took the subway and said they had no trouble. Security escorted them out after the game and brought them to a subway stop 10 minutes away so there wouldn't be any issues.

Admittedly I'm not a huge fan of AO to begin with, but I hate how they seemingly try to make a bunch of profit on these trips. Particularly when their target demographic is 18-35 year olds, it seems silly to create a nearly all inclusive package where you pay out the ass.

No, I manage a hostel. I didn't use much vacation time last year, so I need to burn some of it before the fiscal year ends. Figured I might as well build a trip around that match.

Mexico is in far better shape over the next 5 or so years than the USMNT. They will also go further than us at WC 14. It sucks, but it's true.

I will gladly bet on this. Though there's no way to make it an even bet with group difficulty varying. How about winner of WC qualifying?

Winner of the hexagonal WCQ is the only fair way to do it at this point

I'm down for anything that doesn't cost a fortune. It could be beers or avatar/sig...whatever. I would love to give you a Brian Ching avatar for a month or two. Or maybe I heart Suarez. Anything less than $50 works for me. I don't want the US to lose and not be able to pay rent. :D

$25?

As with my Wake bets, I hope you win.

Works for me. So this is whoever finishes higher in the Hex, yeah?

I would assume so. And if anyone other than Mexico or the US wins the hex then I'll pay you both 50.00

Straight cash, homie?

Looks like I was half right. My $25 dollar bet is with Husky. sd3 and timdunk have a $25 bet on their own.

@DougMacESPN
Kyle Beckerman back training with #RSL today, says @samstejskal. Seems Beckerman isn't going to Honduras. #usmnt

Good

That gives me a happy. Perhaps Klinsi has finally seen the light in that respect anyway.

My guess is something like this.

-----------------------Jozy-----------
---Johnson-------Dempsey---------Zusi-------
---------------Bradley-------Jones-------------------
Castillo------Bocanegra----Cameron----Chandler

You guys criticize Jones in almost every game. Does he still deserve to play or you have limited options?

I think I'm one of the few who actually likes Jones. My guess is most others on here would rather not see him. Williams would work as well if Klinsmann wants to be more defensive. I doubt he goes too attacking in the first qualifier while on the road against a hot Honduras side.

I don't understand tactics and player strengths and such as much as some on the board. I know some have been frustrated at how Jones has been used when he's been out on the wing. Is he more of a defensive central guy like in the lineup above? He's the only American who's starting on a CL side, so he can't suck but so much.

And one factor against him is that he's a card machine, for club, country, whomever. We do need some toughness in the USMNT though.

He's 100% not a wide player or even outside midfielder. He naturally plays entirely as a DM or box to box central midfielder. Klinsmann throwing him out wide was out of desperation. Similar to Williams being played as a RM his first 4 or 5 caps.

The cards don't bother me too much. I'd rather he didn't pick up silly yellows, but he causes opponents to completely change their style with his physical presence.
