Have to judge whether a relatively unknown band is unknown and going to blow up, or unknown because they suck...or if a more popular band is a one-hit wonder and will be pushed out of the industry soon.

It's not like you have a billion choices...and as far as I know they would put a handful of available acts up for popular vote

I mean all this is true, but it doesn't change anything about the student union crew picking good acts. Simple, go hip-hop. People want to dance and have fun. The budget is not big but it's plenty to get a good artist.

A good artist who isn't already booked for specific dates or has open dates that work with our schedule?

Acts often book tours much sooner than we book them so it's not often we can just call them up and say "Yo. swing by here for a small concert for 60% of what you get other places"

And Slim, promoters/publicists work with colleges and student unions all the time. It's a ton of work, and the fact that the student union was always behind for booking doesn't speak well towards their preparedness, nor does their lack of stretching funds speak towards their salesmanship. I get it's an amateur setup vs a professional field, but that's all a bunch of excuses man. I'm sure it's harder for student union to form professional relationships with record labels, artists, promoters, A&R people, etc., because it's only one small part of their job. But all the more reason to include Wake Radio in the process. They have working relationships with labels. They can show the labels/artists how they are tracking the music, how they played the music early, show trends on campus, etc., stuff that I'm sure student union is out of touch with. I disagree with your basic premise that more can't be done is all.
 
i have no idea which soccer thread to look on, but how big of a deal is this soccer match fixing? i feel like it's getting no run in the media, but it seems like a huge fucking deal. if something like this was going on in the NFL/NBA/MLB, it would break the internet.

Think there's just not enough info out yet. It'll be a big deal. It's a bigger deal in Europe already, and all the facts still aren't known.

If that's what I presented as my basic premise then I'm sorry....more could definitely be done...and I agree it would be dumb for them to not work with Wake Radio...for all the reasons you mentioned.

But when Student Union is run by someone splitting their time with a separate full-time position, leaving a large portion of the whole process to a bunch of sorority girls, then we end up with what we have the last decade+.

My premise was intended to be that it's not as easy as just picking a hot band and getting them on campus
 
My Jr/Sr year roommate was the head of Wake Radio in my days. I don't remember anyone listening to it
