Bzzzz v Staak - By The Numbers

yeah.... but then the Joel opened and we had brought GDO in. Good times in the 90s.

I graduated before the Joel opened. We bussed to Greensboro my senior year. But I got to watch Anthony Teachey play, so it was worth it. God I loved that guy. What a heart. And when we talk about culture let's just look back to that guy who had no offensive skill but was the last guy cut, behind Tysdale, on Bob Knight's Olympic team. Knight loved him but couldn't give him the nod because he needed offense. But this whole Wellman/Bzz culture thing is such a sham. We've had great players and teams that have made Wake Forest so proud. I can't begin to describe my disgust with what is happening now. Let's just talk Danny Young's team retiring Ray Meyer for a minute. I want to slam my head into a wall. We have always had teams that represent Wake in the best way. None more so that Chill and Duncan and Skip's teams. If we could have kept that legecy rolling I really think we were on track for a Final Four. Then it all went to shit.

I still.see.delaney rudd about once a month
What a great guy and gives back.so much

I never ever dreamed that we would find ourselves in a position once again where we might compare our situation to the one under Staak ... and then conclude that Staak was better. Unbelievable.
Comparing anyone to Staak and Staak winning the comparison - this is rock bottom.

Seems like if you told any Wake fan that they could fire Staak after 3 years instead of giving him 4, they'd take it.

This is an epic disaster. And it's all brought to you by a man who can't communicate, yet claims to teach, and a man suffering from "smartest guy in the room" syndrome and the inevitable arrogance that goes with it.

I feel like we are comparing the Titantic with the Lusitania. They both sunk after hitting something.

The difference I see in our situation now v. the mid-late 80s is that back then I thought fine, Staak sucks, but we'll fire him and go get a real coach. First, I'm not so sure Ron will fire Buzzdick after this season. Second, even if Ron fires Buzzdick, I don't have faith that Ron can make a competent hire. Third, with the firing of Dino and hiring of Buzzdick, Ron really damaged the Wake brand. So even if some combo of he, Hatch and the BOT form some sort of joint selection committee and go through a competent hiring process, will they be able to entice a top notch coach to come to Wake now? I have my doubts and think that at best we'd end up with a Gregory/Brownell level hire. We could be fucked and irrelevant for quite a while.

I lived through the end of the Staak era - hard to believe we are back there.

If you really want to get pissed compare Staak's double digit losses to Bz...

The Bz regime gets blown out much more than Staak

Bzzzzz- 32 wins/61 losses (avg 11 wins/20 losses) - Retained?!

Gaudio- 61 wins/31 losses (avg 20 wins/10 losses) - Fired?!

Bizarro world?!

I made a couple of more detailed posts about the comparison a while ago. These are from around Christmas, so the numbers will have shifted some, but still give you an idea.

Per the media guide, in his first two seasons, Bzdoofus has played 7 games against top-25 teams and lost them all. In his four seasons, Staak had 33 games and won 4 of them. Those wins were against #13 Clemson in the ACC Tournament in 1987, #20 NCSU in GSO in 1988, #3 UNC in GSO in 1988, and #1 Duke in GSO in 1989. It's also worth noting that he lost 3 overtime games to ranked ACC teams in 1987, and lost a quadruple-overtime game against #20 NCSU in the regular season finale in 1989.

To expand, of Staak's 52 conference losses (including ACCT), I count 31 losses (59.6%) by double digits and 11 (21.2%) by 20 or more points. For Bzdoofus, the numbers are 29 total losses, 25 (86.2%) by double digits, and 13 (44.8%) by 20 or more points.

In other words, when we've taken the floor in an ACC game under Bzz, there's been an 85.3% chance we'd lose, a 73.5% chance we'd lose by double digits, and a 38.2% chance we'd lose by 20+ points.

In the four years of the Staak era, there were 8 teams in the ACC. Of those 28 non-Wake seasons, there were 23 NCAA berths, 12 Sweet 16 appearances, and 3 Final Fours, with an additional 2 NIT berths. That's an 82.1% NCAA probability, with an 89.3% postseason probability. In the two Bzz seasons thus far, there were 11 other teams in the conference, for a total of 22 non-Wake seasons. Those 22 seasons netted 9 NCAA appearances, 5 Sweet 16 appearances, and 0 Final Fours, with an additional 4 NIT berths. That's a 40.9% NCAA probability, with a 59% postseason probability.

In the Staak era, 32 of our 60 (including ACCT) conference games were against top-25 opponents, with 20 of those games coming against top-10 teams and 13 of them coming against top-5 teams. In the [Redacted] era, 7 of our 34 conference games have been against top-25 opponents, with 4 of those games coming against top-10 teams, all of whom were in the top 5 as well. That breaks down to a 53.3/33.3/21.7% split for Staak vs. a 20.6/11.8/11.8% split for Bzdoofus.

Another signature win for Staak, arguably more impressive than the UNC win, was against Clemson in the ACC tourny. "Clemson, orly?" you younguns may ask. Yes, Clemson, 25-6 that year with Horace Grant.

Wasn't Elden Campbell on that team too?
