Oscar Thread

Some Harvard bro with a simple economic model got 17/21 predictions correct tonight and all of the Big 4. All he did was use the past 15 years of winners from all the award shows (BAFTA, SAG, Golden Globes, etc) compared to the Oscar winners to run a regression model to show which award shows are the best predictors for Oscar winners.

What a boss. If I can remember next year, I'm definitely taking his picks and throwing some money down.

Argo synopsis:
And then they made their plane.

It was ok. I thought the directing was better than the movie overall. It does kind of ruin it to know the Canadians did almost everything.

No reason why it still couldn't be a good movie

Cowardly move Benjamin

Impressive, but the acting races were pretty expected, and most thought Argo was going to win with it's hype the last few weeks.

Ang Lee winning was a small upset though.

The best scene in Argo was the fictional moment toward the end when the reluctant character came out of his shell, spoke Farsi and started explaining the movie to the Iranian Storm trooper

Good acting and inspired direction in that scene

What didn't you like about Life Of Pi and SLP?

What made Amour the best?
Silver Linings Playbook was a tasteless, garbled rom-com with no laughs, trying to wring pathos from cartoonish, incoherent depictions of anxiety, grief, and mental illness. I just completely missed anything that made it a good movie. The critical reaction to it baffles me. Life of Pi I thought was visually striking, but completely empty otherwise. Just one big ridiculous metaphor where storytelling stands in as a metaphor for faith, a weak structural device that fails to cover up the fact that the movie is shallow and has nothing to say.

It was an incredibly easy year. I got 18/21 right. The only real upset was Lincoln winning in Art Direction.

I guess that's where my problem is....I rank/vote based on how much I enjoyed the movie and don't really use the technical stuff to influence my choices.

Not a problem, per say. Just different criteria for viewing films. Your list would probably reflect the majority of filmgoers taste far more than mine would. If a large percentage of people saw Amour they would absolutely fucking hate it.

I'll watch it soon, but I'm pretty sure I won't enjoy it too much.

What were your best pictures of the year?...would your list be mostly movies that weren't nominated?

ETA: just saw the PM, so no need to add your best list here

I agree with Slims list from the standpoint of the films I enjoyed most

As far as viewing them critically I would agree Amour was probably the best followed by Lincoln, Beasts of Southern Wild and Django

I missed Director. Part of me thought they'd pick Lee because Lincoln had literally lost all momentum leading up to the show, but I thought there was still a chance. I got 17/21. I missed Lincoln willing art direction or whatever.

Faith is the belief in a story you can't prove true, that's nearly the definition of the word. How do you not notice the characters in the film that blatantly represent your disbelief and lack of faith? You're given a fantastical, epic tale of survival for 90 minutes, but you willingly dismiss that story for a thrown together 2 minute alternative, because you need something more believable. The truth in the film is that neither story can be corroborated, so you're still using faith in believing either one. The book and the movie leave the choice open. Maybe stick to critiquing the visual elements of film.

Argo was ok. The best part of it was the Hollywood satire. Arkin and Goodman delivered.
By the way, in the real story, the Canucks did almost everything.

Huh? In Mendez's book, the Canadians were responsible for (1) hosting the Americans and (2) holding a secret meeting of parliament to allow the Americans to use Canadian passports.

Not worse than the James Franco awards show but this was pretty godawful.

DDL is the MAN.

My guess is McFarlane was told that if he messed up he's never work in Hollywood again.

I really liked Argo and have no beef with it winning, although in terms of awards I tend to want to recognize the movie that sort of offers the best reflection on where we are as a society right now (so that in the 2050, one could look back, watch the 2013 Best Picture and have a better understanding of what was going on). In that case, I think it's clearly Zero Dark Thirty.

Interesting perspective
