Dan's 6-part Wellman interview now online

Thanks to fans of other schools for increased attendance. They got free tickets.

From Part V of the Collins interview: "Our game – and we talk about this in the (NCAA Basketball) Committee all the time – has become so physical. It’s a wrestling contest at times, and as a result we’re not seeing the beauty of the game as we once did. I remember when I first came to the ACC I thought `My goodness, what a great conference this is,’ because they let their athleticism be evident. In the Midwest, it was a wrestling match, or a boxing match, at times. And it was a football game played on a basketball court. And that wasn’t what the ACC did. Well now, I think the ACC is becoming very similar to what the rest of the country is, and we have to because of the national tournament. If you go to the national tournament it can’t be a much different style than everybody else. But as an enterprise, if you will, we’ve really got to look at how we can allow the offense to move with freedom and players move with freedom. I know that’s a point of emphasis in officiating. But we’ve got to continue to move down that path. I went to a couple of NBA games this year and the NBA is less physical, in my humble opinion, than college basketball. They recognize they’ve got great athletes and they want their athleticism to be evident in their games. We’ve got great athletes too, but we’ve to let that athleticism come through. The shooting percentage is down this year. Scoring is down this year. And what we need to do is make sure that the scorers and the shooters have the opportunity to shoot freely. It shouldn’t be that there’s not good defense, but not the contact of today."

Is it just me or do you cringe when you read Wellman's thoughts on the state of college b'ball? As if that is relevant to the question about why we can't shoot the damn basketball. I realize college b'ball isn't anything close to what it was when I was in school during the early 90's (overall better shooters, better fundamentals and generally better execution of schemes).

But his comments seem silly in the context of the debate. Winning at Wake Forest isn't more difficult because the game has changed or because it's more physical; it's harder to win because a) you're not recruiting enough talent; b) you have a coach that is trying to play a rigid system without the benefit of good shooters and/or a PG who can break down a defense and make his teammates better; and c) your buddy can't seem to make the necessary adjustments in key situations or even coach his team into an effective zone on defense by the time Christmas rolls around.

To me, his rambling, evasive answer makes him seem like even more of a detached fool who doesn't really understand the nuances of blending a group of players into a whole that is better than the sum of its parts. If he thinks it's really physical now in the ACC, just wait till next year when we bring in Cuse, ND and Pitt!!

I don't dispute that one. Wasn't student attendance almost non-existent last season? This season, we had big weekend games and some momentum from two big home wins. I think that one is probably right. Doesn't mean much though.

Yep, the Saturday afternoon home games really helped attendance numbers this season. The weeknight games were still pretty low. ACC scheduling was kind from that perspective.

Wellman has put himself in a position where he will have to fire buzz to save his job. I say that because if enough people pull their money, someone will help him make a decision he should've made by himself but, he chose to do the opposite and now has to suffer the consequences. The only question is when.

I actually think it was a very good interview. Good questions and even better answers. Seemed more open/candid in this interview than all the others. Be true to your school, Go Deacs.

The 'big' attendance increase is not really that big. Using the numbers from the Wake Forest site for 2013 total attendance was 153,831, while last year, as posted here was 131,651, for an increase of 22,066 or 16.7% increase.

But this year we had one extra home game, plus and extra ACC 'marquee' game (i.e. CP3 retirement) and two non-conf marque games (SH, X) that we didn't last year.

Extra ACC game (non-marque) 10,157
CP3 retirement our only sell out, which would have drawn a non-marque crowd: 4,016
Two marque non-conf games, compared to the other 5 non-marque: 4,203

So scheduling increased our attendance by 18,376, leaving us with true apples to apples increase of 3,609 or 2.8% over last year.

Ron can chirp all he wants about attendance this year, but we played more big names at home, had an extra ACC game and made a special event out of CP3's retirement. Of course non of this takes into account the actual price paid for tickets since apparently a lot were given away.

What we really need to do is go through the entire interview like they do with politicians and have the 'truth police' analyze the statements.

After all of Wellman's comments in multiple interviews about how great our freshman are, and how they are the right kind of people, not a single one of them better transfer. Especially not the ones we need most (CMM, DT, Moto). If any of those three leave, he was 100% full of crap and there's video to prove it.

Never-mind all the free tickets that he gave away.

Man, really thought he was going to deny interview requests about [Redacted]'s future. I was wrong. After reading Dan's interview, I wish I hadn't been. Although his responses are senseless, inane and illogical, I'll give him some credit for facing the heat from Dan, Kenny and others.

Regardless, in response to some posts about Welman & Co. valuing "entertainment" at home bball games more than winning, I disagree. It seems like Wellman wants to keep [Redacted] and win more games, and the only issue in his mind is how much time it takes. Since he continues to believe he can have both, why would he choose one over the other now? It's pretty clear his bosses aren't applying any real pressure, so why not continue to dream?

good people too..........more importantly good people..........players are good people........ coaches are good people too..........
haven't we all seen "good" people at our work place who just couldn't cut it? I have no problem with "good people" being part of the prerequisite, but not the only one.

Since we gave away as many free tickets and deeply discounted tickets as we could this year, along with free food, etc., and used that as a means to claim "attendance is going up - maybe next year we could schedule some non-conference games during the day on weekdays and give away thousands and thousands of free tickets to school children who could be bused back and forth from school. That should give us another increase in attendance next season.

I'm pretty sure women's basketball has done that.

Another year of this and your purchase of a women's game ticket will get you free admission to the men's game that follows.

Brings back memories of the men's/women's doubleheader against UNC in '95. We lose to UNC in the last minute because Timmy couldn't inbound the ball, watch Sheed and Stackhouse celebrate all over the place. Then an hour later, Marion Jones, Charlotte Smith, and the defending champion UNC women raced up and down the court and completely obliterated our women.

I just remembered this encounter I had with a classmate of mine who was appointed to be a young alumni liaison to the BOT after we graduated a few years ago. I think it's pretty indicative of the lunacy that's prevailing among those who are gathered round the table making the important decisions.

We were at a wedding in the fall of 2011, after Buzz's first stellar season. I knew of this person's position as a liaison to the BOT, so I asked them what the hell was going on with the basketball program. They said without hesitation:

"I promise you we're going to be just fine. I sat in a Board meeting recently and some of them asked Ron the same thing. I'll tell you what he told them: 'Buzz brought in a former Navy Seal and a former NBA strength coach to work with the guys, and they're really turning things around. We'll be fine--don't worry.'"

I couldn't believe they were trying to sell me that load of crap. I told them that it's good to know that we'd have the best conditioned team in the ACC and that maybe we could win the ACC if there was a competition on a ropes course and not the basketball court.

Oh man. I had forgotten all about that Navy Seal thing. Hilarious.

I would watch that reality show. It would be way better than watching Wake Forest play basketball.
