Deacon Football 2013 -- New Coaches add excitement

I really dont know. He is a competent kid, has good footspeed and he's not new to the game. He certainly is helping Ben Emert (the FB from Ball Ground, Georgia who was cumulative Georgia powerlifter of the year as a hs sr). Ben is healthy and rocked a 454 pound free front squat. Those two work together daily and are pushing it to fill Bohanon's shoes.

DeAndre Martin is sort of an X-Factor....he does so many things well and it would not suprise me t6 see him line up at Fullback at some point. He is 6'2.5 and 225 / BP's 338 / hang and cleans 315. Probably throws as pretty a ball as anybody on the team and could punt in a pinch. Really nice all-around footballer who is "country strong" while clocking a swift 4.5 flat forty.

Thanks. Good to have options!

Would be nice to have Martin and Harris on the field at the same time. Way back in the day, our offense was solid with Barclay and Williams in the split back together.

Agree wholeheartedly. That would be real nice. Martin has a natural strength that can't be coached and can drag/move a pile. To top it off he throws an old-school text-book spiral that looks like the elongated motion of slingers of yore, like Norm Snead. At first you think Martin is 'lucky" but after you watch him long enough you realize that he really can pretty much throw it on a line wherever he wants. He has to be a Wildcat option (imho) with the pitch to Harris or the keep or the option read launch to a streaking Campanaro, et. al,.

I haven't been a big fan of how Lobo has used the Wildcat because he's either used it with the wrong personnel (D'Angelo Bryant) or used it into the ground (home game vs. Clemson several years back).

The Wildcat (or Free Will Baptist) with Martin as you describe would be very promising.

Even just lining up Martin at FB in the I-formation or split back would be promising because Harris and Martin offer different threats and the defense doesn't know what they'll get. That's especially true with Camp in motion.

Orville Reynolds has pleasantly suprised at the slot position. Getting Camp's reps and after a great winter -- Orville clocked a 4.28 40, benched 308 pounds and is showing solid hands and speedy moves out of his breaks. He is a shade over 5'7 and 181 pounds.

Kevin Sousa continues on his way... like a golfer changing his swing, Sousa has been working with Coach Elrod to tighten his swing and it just takes some time for the mechanics to work out. This is why you will hear guys commenting that he's throwing balls in the dirt in front of WR's --- he certainly has experienced the "shanks" some but it is an 18 month process when you are involved with changing 'muscle memory". One good thing is that he is consistent and his long ball has really improved. The short throws are a better formula as you work your way up to the receiver. It is better than having a problem with balls that sail -- see Tahj Boyd and what will kill his pro chances if he is unable to remedy.

Nobody works any harder than Kevin. He checks in at a shade over 6'4 and 242 pounds -- can run a 4.48 40....3 weeks ago he walked over to the stand and grabbed 308 pounds and military pressed it right over his head -- and though he does not try and max on the bench he put up 352 pounds. with ease...

From Lobo's twitter feed this am

One of the great things about social media is the opportunity to get insight into training, etc... Cool stuff

One thing that bothered me from following that youtube account is how Grobe is (1) rarely there and (2) when he is there he is usually dressed formally (sports coat or sweater vest) like he is just stopping by while all the other coaches are there in sweats and T-shirts. Maybe I am just superimposing my own suspicions but it really gives off the impression that Grobe is too comfortable here. Not coaching with his hair on fire.

Thanks for the good news, Lectro. I really needed some.

Not sure if this is the right thread for it - but who is going to play safety for us next year? Mack is gone and the reports from spring practice is that Gibson has moved to RB and Lowe to OLB. I guess Marshall has one spot locked down and then who? Is Janvion ready to play? One of the CBs moving over (didn't Ward play some safety last seson)? It just seems like we were really think back there before we moved players to other positions.

Lectro, how do honestly see Sousa's career going? I seem to keep hearing that Cameron is going to be the guy after Price graduates, but here we have Sousa who seems to have physical tools at Quarterback I'm not sure we've ever seen at Wake and he seems like the type of athlete that could really run an offense like Grobe seems to want. I just would hate to see him wasted.

They could convert him to TE then waste him.

It was Kevin's choice...he wants to become a QB and he and Elrod both were on record as saying it would not be until his RS Sophomore season till the changes would begin to bear fruit. We will see. He is a marvelous talent and certainly does not plan on handing the job to Cameron. I predict a helluva battle between these two.

Zach Gordon is showing significant gains -- he is a big kid - maybe a shade under 6'5 and about 250. Great looking prospect at TE. Strong...spends his hours with Garside and Emert....330 clean and jerk --

Steve Donatell and Kevis Jones are both for real. I was a little concerned that Donatell might have difficulty taking weight and mass (Joey Ehrman) but that has not been the case... Ed Donatell's boy has a mentor on the way in Warren Belin. Steve is a stout 6 foot 5 and 225 pounds as a rising RS FR. Both he and Kevis Jones showed tremendous hops by matching Jackson all the way to the 54" vertical stack. You can see why Nebraska offered Donatell as a QB...he is a real athlete who is legit 4.5 - 4.55 40. Looks like a young Mark Herzlich.

Kevis is up to 230+ at almost 6 foot 3. Great spring and speed...this guy played S, WR, QB, LB in highschool and has grown into fast and physical young LB.

On the OL the guys are making some great strides... Tyler Hayworth "Turtle" is just 6 foot 3 but is a stout 305 pounds. He has worked his butt off and showed real well in the shuttle -- pretty quick for a biggun! He also benched 330 pounds 5 times and maxed at 400.

Frank Souza is about 6'2 and 3/4 and 308 pounds...he continues to be a bell cow in the weight room. Big, powerful som=bit who is all business when he's on the job. 401 front squat.

Our official roster needs lots of the weights updated. Seems like most of the weights are from high school...........not current after 1 1/2 years of eating plus S&C.
