Now, some firms have begun embracing parental involvement and using it to attract and hold onto talent and boost employee morale. One of them is Northwestern Mutual. Michael Van Grinsven, field-growth and development director at the Milwaukee-based financial firm, says the company does everything it can to accommodate the parents of college-aged interns, including regularly inviting them to the office for open houses.

“It’s become best practice,” Mr. Van Grinsven says, noting that parents can influence their children’s career decisions. Some Northwestern Mutual managers call or send notes to parents when interns achieve their sales goals and let parents come along to interviews and hear details of job offers. They may even visit parents at home.

We had some interns this summer that were pretty solid dudes, not giant pussies

It was refreshing

Northwestern Mutual just wants to bring the parents in to see if they can sell them something.

Yeah, I think more interns started hitting their sales goal because their parents just waited until the last minute and bought whatever was left. Just like those damn wrapping paper and christmas cookie elementary school fundraisers

My friend was CFO of Wynn's warranty division. I was consulting for him when he called me into his office to tell me about two of employees whose parents had called to ask why their kid hadn't been promoted or gotten a bigger bonus.

After we stopped laughing, I came up with a plan. At lunch, we stopped at the 99cent Store and picked up a package of diapers. He called each employee in and handed them a diaper (he put in a bag so other employees wouldn't see them). They each asked him why. He told them about the calls from their mommies.

Apparently they got it. HR didn't get any other calls.

If we are talking about interns, aren't their parents essentially paying their salary so the company can get free labor?

Most of the places described in the article almost certainly pay their interns.

There's not much substance to the actual article. The USA is well below global averages on this stuff.

Cool story, except for the part where you just made everything up.

If RJ responds, the odds are good there will be at least one "my bad" in said response.
