Welcome Dave Clawson - 430PM Presser (Clawson Wins Presser, OGB Gets E-Boners)

I really don't get why in the world a Wake fan would want to take a big dump on Grobe's legacy. He left the football program in much better shape than he found it, and gave us a conference title, an Orange Bowl bid, and a bunch of other great wins to boot. When you consider that Reagan just entered office the last time either Carolina or State won the ACC........

He got stale, and was loyal to a fault, but his positive influence on Wake football far outweighed any negative influence.

Last line says it all.

Absolutely!!!

You could argue that Grobe's successful run helped fund the stadium upgrades, though I think most of those were planned prior to the OB year. Grobe's final years were no better than Caldwell's and Grobe is leaving us with very little talent on the roster. Grobe came in and took us to a bowl game right away. There is no way that is even a possibility for Clawson.

Is it me or is the athletics dept milking this hire for all its worth? I have never seen so many Facebook posts, emails, and videos. Ron is really trying to dig out of the hole.

That's what they're supposed to be doing. Control the narrative. Good for them.

Yeah, they are really making a big deal out of it. I kind of like it though. Has to be one of the higher profile hires we've made in a revenue sport, and he just seems great, so I say go for it.

Says alot though that when Buzz came in Ron said he wasn't concerned about winning the press conference.

Hard to say. Nobody thought we had bowl talent on the roster after Caldwell's 2-9 final campaign. The thought at the time was that this was a substantial rebuilding project.

I totally understand that he's up against it. But I'm not yet ready to give up on next season. The ACC is totally unpredictable, we may have some hidden talent that this coaching staff can uncover, and there may be 6 wins they can find somewhere.

I'm certainly not conceding that a bowl game next year isn't possible. Yeah, we lose a lot, but we've got an FCS game and Army coming here. ULM loses a lot I think off a team there wasn't very good this year. I looked at Utah St's roster and they lose abunch of starters. Syracuse comes here next year, as does BC and there's no guarantee that the train wreck at NC State will be better next year. I don't think it's impossible for us to get to 6 wins next season.

Tanner Price certainly isn't irreplacable. Without Camp, we were very competitive with the Coastal Champ and an SEC bowl team our final two games. We could have won both as lifeless as our offense was. Whitlock is a huge loss, but most of the defense returns.

Hard to say, maybe. But if it's hard to say, then I wouldn't be throwing around the "better than he found it" comment. I'd say Grobe had some historically great seasons at Wake, raised our expectations, and did it with class. Clawson is inheriting a team with five straight losing seasons that is losing an all conference d-lineman, all conference record setting receiver, and four year starting quarterback. If Clawson gets us anywhere near .500 he's an even better hire than the AD is making him out to be...

ETA: I know this board is often called the lunatic fringe, but I'm fully prepared to give Clawson a long leash as I think he has a lot of work to do, and I think his past accomplishments warrants it. Just as long as we are progressing every year and building toward a more consistent program.

I agree totally. The talent may have been weak winning the way Grobe wanted to win, but it's hard to say how Clawson will use it. My guess is he would have taken us to 7-8 wins this year...and one way to look at it from that perspective is the talent losses may drop us only back 2 games. Most of the talent we have is still pretty solid. We'll have to see who he brings with him to shore up any weaknesses.

We lost more than Nikita on defense.

Great video. I'm glad Wake is pushing this coach out to the public (he can certainly handle it) and pushing season ticket sales. Gets fans in the seats, generate revenue, watch the rebuilding process, and helping the recruiting process. The excitement is absolutely palpable and I would expect a big jump in attendance next season.
