Wake Hires Kevin Higgins (Citadel HC) As Assistant Head Coach

Based on his time in the NFL, it looks like he'll be WR Coach/Assistant Head Coach.

Interesting since Citadel was primarily a rushing team this past season.

In his late 50s. Plenty of experience.

It looks like he is bringing more coaching experience to the table than Taylor Stubblefield. I guess that means Taylor Stubblefield is out.

Pretty impressive we were able to get a head coach at a D-I school to come here as an assistant. Clawson continues to be a badass

Similar to Grobe pulling Tim Billings from SEMO.

Higgins was 6-1 over Lafayette and 6-0 over VMI.

Yeah, and it's not like he's a schmo coach either, has a solid track record

Between, Clawson, Ruggiero, and Higgins, I love how many guys on staff have had experience evaluating and coaching QB's.

I know its early and I'm blinded with excitement, but I can't say I disagree with anything Clawson has done at this point. Not a thing that leaves me scratching my head.

Was posting on the other thread, but will post here. Looks very solid. He was pretty mediocre at Citadel. Is that to be expected? I don't know much about them or the SoCon but his numbers there over nine years are not very good. Anyone with some context?

I wonder how this rumored title of "Assistant Head Coach" will impact Ruggerio and/or Elko, Clawson's offense and defense coordinators at BGSU? Billy Mitchell held this title at Wake under Grobe. He coached kickers.

In context, he had a great career at The Citadel. Tied for longest tenured coach in Citadel history at 9 years with former AD Eddie Teague former MD OC and current UCF OC Charlie Taaffe. Based on the extension, they wanted him to coach more. He had two winning seasons, including the first since 1994 and 1997.

And he didn't do any worse against Clemson this year than we did.

Obviously time will tell, but this look like a very nice pickup.

Same here.

FWIW, I was talking with a friend yesterday who is neighbors with one of Tom O'Brien's former assistants at State. As we all know, the coaching community is pretty tight and this coach commented that Wake made an outstanding hire in Dave Clawson. Couldn't say enough good things about Clawson and said that Wake was smart to pick him instead of Lembo.

My bet is Higgins will be behind the scenes hardliner for Clawson. He'll be the "principal's" office and doghouse monitor while Clawson sweeps recruits off their feet and maintains positive player relationships.

Source tells me that Kevin Higgins will be the wide receivers coach and associate head coach at Wake Forest

Sounds about right. At my HS, the Principal was the smiling guy out front, talking to the parents and students and saying nice things, meanwhile, in a back office was one of the assistant principals who you had to deal with if you were late, missed classes or engaged in other behavior that was unacceptable.

ETA:

The down side of this is that it appears he also will coach a position group. Makes it more difficult to be the tutor for one group of players and the disciplinarian for the team. Players in his position group shouldn't be wondering if they missed an assignment they didn't remember or the coach just wants to give them a new page for the playbook.

Interesting that Clawson would go outside his former staff to hire the assistant HC, especially since both coordinators are coming with him.
