Dented, wherever you fall on the issue, joining the staff of a coach who went 8-24 the previous year is a risky proposition, especially for someone looking to break into the business at his alma mater. There's going to be a DOBO spot opening up next year or the year after most likely. We'll know much more about the future of Wake then.

You fucked your own argument, PH. You are exactly right, Chill taking the DOBO is an extremely risky proposition if he thinks a new coach (not already on staff) will be coach at Wake in a year or two.

Huh? I'm saying that Battle will likely be leaving after this year or the next. A potential DOBO could still get a DOBO position after Battle leaves with a much better idea of Bz' long term future than he'd have now. It's a simple straight forward argument. You could think the world of Bz and realize that waiting a year to take the position would be prudent.

I thought you meant the DOBO position would open up because Bzd would be gone which would be the simple straight forward argument for any normal person not named you.

Your argument still doesn't work, however, if you sit down and actually think about it. For arguments sake, let's say that Battle leaves after the year. If Chill is on staff, then he probably slides up to third assistant at worst, right? Why would he wait for Battle to leave to take the DOBO? If Battle leaves, Bzd replaces him with the DOBO from this coming year, and then Bzd succeeds, then Chill is stuck in DOBO until he takes an assistant's job somewhere else. If Chills takes the DOBO this year, then he's an assistant the next year. If Bzd gets fired, then Chill is an assistant coach looking for a new job, not a DOBO.

Insert Latin phrase (like 'ergo'), your schooled, school boy.
 
Does it really matter if Chill is an 1st year assistant coach looking for a job or a DOBO? Not much distinction there in terms of his long-term coaching prospects.

The decision is whether this is a long-term job or not. That's a decision better made after next year. It's about whether to be a DOBO on a soon to be fired staff or a former Wake Forest great who isn't in coaching at all.

It doesn't. Yours does. That's why you are mired in academia. You don't translate well to the rest of society.

I'll try to be clear. It is far far far easier to get an assistant coaching job if you have experience as an assistant coach. Wake Forest great with a legendary cross over dribble is not going to get you a job at too many places besides Wake Forest, Xavier, and a few other places.

However, if you are DOBO for a year and an assistant coach that recruits for one year, you are in a much better place to get a coaching job elsewhere if Bzd doesn't work out.

Sitting on your ass watching college hoops for two years is not better experience than DOBO for a year (he's hoping) then an assistant's chair.

It's that real-world simple

That said, if I had to choose being stuck in a tent for a week at 15,000 feet with PHDeac or stuck in a tent for two weeks at 18,000 feet with JET, I would choose JET without hesitation.

Chill was back here several weeks ago and came to lunch with us!! It was fun looking back on The Move and listening to all his stories! Those were our basketball glory days.
