US officials telling Barbara Starr that there is a "likelihood" than the plans is at the bottom of the Indian Ocean.
 
New intel suggests the plane is in this area.

The shutdown of two communication systems happened separately, 14 minutes apart, two US officials have told ABC news in the US, indicating a possible deliberate act.

The unnamed investigators believe the data reporting system shut down at 1.07am and the transponder at 1.21am, calling it a “systematic shut down.”

ABC cited a source saying this disputes the theory of a single catastrophic theory.
If this is accurate, someone with pretty sophisticated knowledge of the aircraft didn't want the plane tracked and knew what they were doing. Why?
 
If the above report is correct I think someone wanted to crash that plane and did not want the wreckage to be found, which is why they disabled the communications equipment and flew it four hours off course. I'd check to see if anyone had recently taken out a big insurance policy. Or maybe some crew members got into an argument and one of them killed or incapacitated the other and, figuring his life was over and he didn't want to bring shame on his family, he decided to ditch the aircraft. Or maybe someone was sympathetic to Uighur Islamists and decided to kill a plane full of Chinese (the recent train station knife attack, described as "China's 9/11", happened just days before). Anyway, that's my guess as to what happened. Whoever was responsible knew their way around the aircraft. If there were terrorists onboard they would've been identified by now. I'm sure everyone on that plane has been looked at closely. At what point would the passengers have realized something was amiss and started trying to make phone calls?

The co-pilot of EgyptAir Flight 990, which crashed off New England in 1999, killing 217 people, deliberately crashed the plane as an act of revenge, according to a source close to the investigation.

Gamil el-Batouty had earlier been reprimanded for sexual misconduct and the executive who told him he would not be allowed to fly US routes again was on board the plane.
On board the doomed flight was Hatem Rushdy, the chief of EgyptAir's Boeing 767 pilot group, who had just reprimanded el-Batouty. He told him that as a result of his sexual activities he would not fly transatlantic routes - which carry extra pay - again.

"Rushdy told him 'this is your last flight' and el-Batouty's attitude was 'this is the last flight for you too'," the former EgyptAir captain Hanofy Taha Mahmoud Hamdy told the Los Angeles Times.
The blackbox recordings indicate that Rushdy had left his first-class seat and entered the cockpit. But as soon as he left, el-Batouty, who was supposed to fly the second five-hour section of the flight, entered the cockpit and ordered a younger first officer out of his chair.

Saying "I rely on God", he switched off the auto-pilot and pushed the plane into a dive.

Captain Ahmed el-Habashi, who had been out of the cockpit managed to struggle back in, and shouted: "What's happening, Gamil? What's happening?" El-Batouty said again "I rely on God," and shut down the fuel to both engines.

Habishi shouted: "What is this? Did you shut the engines?" and grabbed the controls. "Pull with me! Pull with me!" he screamed.

The plane, which had been in a nosedive, then soared back up to 24,000 feet, but lost all power and broke up from the stress.

"I think [el-Batouty] had been looking at the door, looking at the moment when Rushdy is out of the cockpit," Mr Hamdy said. "This is the most suitable moment to fulfil what he is going to do."

Real talk: 1) plane is flying all doo dee doo dee doo, 2) wing falls off, 3) everyone is like oh shit for about 25 seconds, 4) water, 5) lots more water, 6) everything is really calm, 7) days later, a shark takes an iPhone shit.

Only the plane abruptly changed direction and flew for four hours more far off course into the Indian Ocean. Whoever was in control of that plane knew what they were doing and did not want the location known.
 
Not a good week for flying. Yesterday in Philly a plane's nose gear collapsed as it as about to take off and it did a nosedive (everyone is okay). Also yesterday, also in Philly, a guy dressed impersonated an Air France employee and gained access to the cockpit.

What is the possibility that there was a pressure loss in the plane after the course change, the cockpit wasn't sealed, and everybody passed out and died from loss of oxygen, and the plane kept flying on autopilot until it ran out of fuel?

Plausible, but doesn't explain the deliberate switching off of the various location devices.
