Chris Mack - Legitimate Target

Also have to remember that X was his alma mater, so that probably played a part.

I get it. My point isn't that we shouldn't look at Mack, it's more that why would he necessarily come to Wake? He obviously has loyalty to Ohio and didn't stay that long at Wake for various reasons. Through 5 full seasons, he is 111-57 at Xavier. Miller was 120–47- not a huge difference there. Xavier has become the launching pad for the blue blood programs. Why go to Wake and have to compete against Pitino, Boeheim, Roy, K, and possibly Calhoun when you could wait a few years and get one of those jobs? There is going to be a huge coaching vacuum in the next few years at the top programs. Wake will never be a blue blood (meaning top 10-15 program) basketball job unless we fall into a K-type situation and get a genius in his 30's- it just ain't happening. Mack would be better off waiting for Calipari to get Kentucky on probation and take that one. Also, Crean isn't exactly blowing it out of the water at IU- only slightly over .500 in 6 full seasons. There will be be a lot of blue blood jobs available in the next few years.

Right or wrong, we lump Mack with Skip/Dino and assume that we'll get the same brand of basketball with Mack. As others have said, I think we would all have a very different attitude towards him had he not been an assistant here.

I do recall that Mack was instrumental in teaching good defense. Hence, why we just didn't play defense the year after he left in 2004-2005. What I think is weird is that he left Wake in the Spring of 2004 to go back to Xavier to be the top assistant. Thad had left to go to tOSU and Miller took over and wanted Mack on the staff. He was the 3rd assistant on the Wake staff behind Battle and Dino. I get it, its better to be top assistant than 3rd assistant, but why leave to still be an assistant at an A10 school when you could have stayed and been on the staff of a team that many predicted was going to win the national championship? It just seems weird to me...maybe its similar to Troy Calhoun and that he just didn't like Winston and wanted to get back home...looks like he and his wife are both from Ohio as well...seems like it would have to be a great opportunity to get them to leave Cincy...don't know if that is necessarily a place that he already spent 3 years at and 2 of his coaching mentors have some complicated history there....not to mention working for the man who fired one of his mentors...

Uhh, Money?

Chris Mack isn't getting a blue blood job. He may not even be offered our job.

So are we already at our floor?

I just hope we don't end up hiring someone that NOBODY has on the radar. We saw what happened the last time.

Unless it's something so ridiculously awesome that nobody could imagine it. Like Phil Jackson tells the Knicks to shove it. He wants the challenge that Wake would bring and he brings on a staff of Coach Norman Dale, Brad Stephens and Tim Duncan.

While Shaka has to be (and from all accounts seems to be) our top choice, I really think Mack could be a good fit at Wake. Four NCAAT appearances in five years, including two Sweet Sixteens and a second round appearance. He was also A10 COY a few years ago. His recruiting has also been pretty impressive at a school like Xavier, imagine what he can do at Wake.

Is he a sexy name? No, not particularly. But when perusing the rest of the available coaches, outside of Shaka, Marshall, and Howland, I think Mack would be as good a choice as any.

There's no real reason to think that. The job just officially opened less than a week ago.

Yup, good point. As much as we distrust Kim Ron Il, we can't pretend to know all the ins and outs of the search. Sounds like Shaka is being pursued.

No there won't be.

Duke--> Internal
Syracuse--> Internal
Louisville--> Richard Pitino or Steve Masiello
Kansas--> Self is 51
Michigan State--> Izzo is 59
Kentucky--> Calipari is 55
UCLA--> Alford is 49
Indiana--> Crean is 47
UNC--> Roy is 63

Hard to know what's going to happen with UNC and Roy, but other than that the best shot at an opening is Indiana, and I just wouldn't count Crean out yet. And that's the least blueblood of the bluebloods. And the boosters apparently want Mike Woodson.

Beyond that, your best shot is Calipari or Self going to the NBA, but those are long odds. I have a really hard time believing Mack thinks an elite job is on its way for him.

NOOOOOOO!

I am so through with X. Marshall or Howland if Shaka truly is off the table to Siberia.

Marshall is more off the table than Shaka, even if there's a 99% chance the Marquette rumors are true. Move on.

I feel like there needs to be a realistic backup plan if Shaka, Howland, and Archie are off the table. Amaker or Mack?

Palma was referring to how Ron apparently panicked and hired he who shall not be named the last time around after getting shot down by Stevens.

I'm not convinced he panicked. That hire was made too quickly for Bz not to have been near the top of his list.

Probably been following Wake sports longer than either of you.

The chicken little mindset is as stupid as the LOWF mindset.

This is a joke, right? The sky fell. We've only won 17 ACC games over the last 4 seasons. No post-season. That's worse than anybody predicted 4 years ago. You can't make fun of people for saying the sky was falling. It fell.
