SHAKA! SHAKA! SHAKA! - LET'S BE POSITIVE. WE'RE STILL ALIVE!

Being a Wake fan is tough. You always have a little hope that something big will happen, but deep down you know that nothing will. We should be given freaking medals.

Yep. I've been watching this shit since I was 5. WFU bball camps. as a kid. Claim to fame at age 13 was playing cards with Skip Brown and letting him use my box fan during camp. Got to go to all the ACC tournaments since about 1971 as my parents always found an extra ticket for me. Wake undergrad (early decision b/c it's the only place I ever wanted to go), played fb at Wake as a walk-on under Mackovic, Wake law school. Was first in line those 7 years for ACC tournament tickets. My Dad, Wake class of __, died and we kept and fixed up my parents' house in a Wake Forest theme. I love Wake Forest and it breaks my heart to have such an incompetent man running our athletic department. We'll never recover.

He was fortunate to make the FF that year and has been unlucky to not advance further in other years. That's not why Shaka is a great candidate. He's great because he's turned VCU into a consistently awesome program year after year (and improving every year) based on both his strategy as well as really good recruiting at a school with zero tradition.

I want(ed) Shaka as much as anyone but to imply that he turned VCU into something is a little bit of an exaggeration. They were a good accomplished program before he took over.

more would than currently do

This. I'm thankful for those of you who pay for pathetic athletics with no commitment to winning. I'll pay for excellence.

This makes me sad. We deserve better than this fucking asshole. #WellmanOUT

Anthony Grant got as far as the 2nd round. Shaka has made it to the same number of FFs as Wake Forest.

Sounds like a pledge to me. If you can get ph to donate more than .02 anything is possible!

They averaged about as many wins there in the 3 years before him as with him. Anthony Grant won his conference regular season 3 straight years before him and won 2 conference tourneys in 2 years and has been so-so at Bama. Smart has one conference tourney title.

I would be thrilled to have him, but even then I would realize there could be other coaches out there that have as much or more success as him out of the available pool for us.

Apples and oranges as they have moved to the A-10 and are playing harder schedules. There's a reason VCU has had two straight five seeds (the highest seed they had under Grant and Capel was 11)

This is like the exact type of question that kenpom is most useful for answering.

There is no doubt that VCU has taken a step up under him but to suggest that he turned them around or took over a failing program is not accurate.

LOL siff. You know Wake fans don't understand the difference.

palma, ApeTit gets a beer on me when I meet him.

Sokolove, I waste too much time on Wake sports. It would be a shame if I wasted my money, too. If MSD makes sure I'm not wasting my time, it's not such a risk to give the AD my money.

Even comparing his 3 years in the CAA to Grant's 3 years in the CAA, he didn't do as good reg. season and tournament.

I would love to have him, but I am not going to freak out and say we should disband the program. It's likely we will look back and say that Candidate A was as successful over the same period much cheaper. Let's hope we get that candidate if we don't get him.

Well yeah, obviously he didn't. I was actually skeptical about him as a coach until after his third season (the FF was his 2nd year) because I thought he may have just been riding the awesome team Grant put together and had a lucky run in the NCAA tournament. But then he lost the core of the FF team and had arguably an even better overall team his 3rd year with a whole new group of players which is really what sold me.

Speaking of, what's most surprising for me is that Anthony Grant hasn't won more at Bama. He's okay, I guess, and I still think he'll turn it around, but his lack of success is the one thing that gives me pause about some of the younger, more inexperienced candidates.

Shaka is the sexy hire but I want to go all Viking on the Big East and steal Jay Wright.

If he doesn't come to wake, I hope he sucks just as much as Grant does at bama and hope finds himself riding the bench as an assistant like Capel.

Shaka was my 1 and Marshall was my 1b

If we don't get either of those guys I want to go the old experience rout...Howland or Barnes. That might end up being the best road anyway. Get someone in here for 7-10 years that can elevate the program. The "ceiling" might not be as high as the young guys but I could absolutely see them turning us into a nationally relevant program again. Not to mention their basement is not near as low.

I mean, today the Richmond paper is saying the VCU AD, as of Sunday, had started a discussion with Smart and "will continue that discussion this week." The same VCU AD said he hasn't been contacted by WF or Marquette. Obviously the meat of this article is old and I imagine contact has been made because I trust the Goodman ESPN article. At odds with that is the purported VCU fan angle. How this cauldron of conflicting information could lead a rational person to believe that Smart just inked a deal to a school that, as discussed earlier, hasn't even hired his boss is odd. Who is making this deal and how can a coach ink a 6-year (or whatever-year) deal without knowing anything about the job he accepted? Expectations and otherwise. The only real answer is what he'd be paid, but he has a history of turning down big money for stability.

I'm not saying Marquette isn't getting him or we are. All I'm saying is nothing adds up, so the early reports probably aren't true.

I agree with the above post about Jay Wright. He would be the real home run hire

Wellman has contacted everyone on the top five. He is working them hard. I have no doubt about it. This is his final big hire before he retires. He fucked up with Bz but not this time.
