Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

Not that anyone believes Miller would leave AZ to come here, but for the deluded, there's this from a couple of years ago - when Maryland was trying to get him:

http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebask...5385/why-didnt-sean-miller-leave-for-maryland

According to the Washington Post, one reason Miller didn't leave was because Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson, while interviewing the coach in Las Vegas, would not relent on academic standards for players.
Special admits. That's a term for special admission to a university, a way for a coach to secure more talented players -- most of whom are African American, from inner cities -- without strictly conforming to exact NCAA standards. It's what many successful coaches feel they need to compete against other schools that give talented, academically challenged kids a break that other student-athletes don't receive. It's what Miller wanted to coach at Maryland, according to two people familiar with the conversation.

Many coaches might have asked for the same. But it does show that Anderson is not complicit in anything under the table, because this is what he said:

No.

So we're not getting Sean Miller then. (Not that we were getting him anyway).

I don't want to be a total hater toward Archie Miller, because I do think if Shaka doesn't work out he will probably get a call from us, but his conference record is 9-7, 7-9, 10-6 in the A-10, which is essentially what Brian Gregory was doing when he was coach there. He's made a nice run in the tournament this year, but I don't think he's nearly an established enough winner to be a "home run" hire.

I also think people are reading too much into the "certain elements" part of Dan's story. He talks about how he was just hanging out shooting the shit with people at football practice - for all we know, "certain elements (or factions, whatever he said) could have been some random fans who don't think Shaka is that great (for what reason, I have no idea).

Thread is getting stale. Let's spice it up.

He did mention Childress, Camp, etc. being there no?

Except that his first team only had 8 scholarship players (4 seniors) that were pretty bad in Gregory's last year. And then in year 2 Archie completely rolled over the roster with his guys. No team in the A-10 has more new players the last 2-3 years than Dayton.

So yeah, Dayton isn't super great quite yet. But it's pretty obvious that they are going to get there even though they haven't popped.

Also Brian Gregory has a crappy advanced stats resume while Archie is nearly perfect.

The BC fan and the VCU baller just had a hilarious exchange where the BC guys says they offer Shaka 5 mill and the VCU baller says Shaka will go much higher (i think it's safe to say he's not talking about monetary compensation).

I think its useful to include how much you value a coach when saying you'd think he was a home run hire.

1) Shaka, Marshall, Wright ( 3mill aav and however long they want big contract buyout included) obviously top three choices for the brinks truck approach want them here a while and basketball wise would be beyond amazing.

2) Archie Miller, Mack, Rick Barnes ,Howland (2.0- 2.5 mill range)- I really have question marks about Howland and I think he's desperate but he's a "big proven name" Barnes and Miller I would be happy with for different reasons and Mack is my safety net because he would be a solid hire who can win basketball games. Obviously if we sign Mack in the next couple of days I would have to get over the drop in excietmnt from the first group to second but Wake Basketball would STILL be in much better shape going forward.

3) Danny Manning , Mike White, Russell Turner etc- no with maybe Danny Manning being the extreme safety net I just need a couple more years of experience or success as a head coach in a bigger conference .

I would rather have Manning or White than Rick Barnes.

Absolutely. Of the old retreads, I'd rather have Howland, though I fear he might not put together a great staff and have trouble recruiting.

Here is a crazy thought that would make the last two pieces by Dan make sense.

We are making a play for Sean Miller.

He's still coaching and is likely coaching through next weekend this justifying Wellman's comments about a long search.

He would be legit home run and I could imagine some saying Shaka is settling by comparison.

It's crazy but that's the only thing that makes sense given what Dan has shared.

You don't seem to put to much value in Dan's work, typically. I think you should stick with that. I doubt Dan is getting real scoop here. I doubt Dan has penetrated that inner circle. Could be wrong but I bet he is getting biased/tainted morsels from the periphery.

I do agree that Archie may be overhyped right now but I am pretty sure most on the coaching thread have thought of him as a great Tier 2/3 option. The tourney run adds to what we already liked, and watching his team play a few things have stuck out to me.

1. Depth, Archie uses a ton of players.
2. Boxing out, his team ACTUALLY BOXES OUT imagine that.
3. Clutch free throw shooting.

I like Archie a lot but I wouldn't choose him over Shaka, Marshall or Howland. Would be a great hire though.

If we're not getting Shaka I hope we don't go below a Marshall or Howland caliber name. We have got to have someone who has been proven to be a flat out great college coach and has the name recognition to make people sit up and take notice. I have little doubt Howland could do great things here. But I prefer Marshall. Have a bad feeling we're gonna end up with a much lesser name though.

WF needs a coach that can build a soild program, like Tony Bennett did with UVA. What good will it do if WF hires a "name", if he does not deliver? Not saying it can't be both, but when listing priorities for the next coach, just hiring a "name" without the commitment, drive and longevity to build a program won't help WF as soon as the press conference is over.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who isn't on board with the conspiracy theories regarding Dan's column and what it is supposed to signify.
