Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

All you fools are on notice.

It's not Shaka, but if Shaka says no then I'm okay with this. Wellman could do ALOT worse with some of the other rumored candidates

I would only be ok with Danny manning if the buyout is ridiculously high. We can't go with a high risk high reward candidate if we risk losing all that reward if a Kansas calls.

Manning isn't awful. Infinitely better than you know who.
But wellman better have struck out with several others

Manning will be a solid hire for Wake Forest and a huge step forward in rebuilding its program, Look for Manning to retain Randolph Childress from our current staff. While not Shaka Smart or Archie Miller, Manning has plenty of upside and ties to the Piedmont Triad. He also has instant street cred and should recruit very well.

Manning still though may be a smoke screen as Wellman tries to pry loose Archie Miller. Miller has to decide if he wants to set up his own dynasty at Wake Forest or hold out for the NC State job when Gottfried burns out. Assuming we cannot get Smart, Miller or Manning each would be a solid hire for Wake Forest and in my opinion each better than Mack

I would be ok with Manning. Solid recognizable name with ties to the area, great asst coach experience at Kansas and a few years as HC. He surely would be able to recruit. We'll see how it develops.

I think Skip is the only Wake coach in the ACC-era to have won a NCAAT game prior to his hire. His '97 Xavier team advanced to the second round.

Outside of that, I believe the other 9 HC's since 1953 have come in to the job without a NCAAT game win on their resume.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong... If that's the case, that's an amazing statistic.

Is the Shaka dream officially dead? I am still clinging onto hope...

Maybe we had big dollars for shaka but that was it. So a few big donors go to ron and say "we want shaka". Ron says it costs $$$.

Donors give us money for shaka. He doesn't come and now we have bzd money to spend

So we went from all these home run hires

Well done.

That wasn't my point, you weren't paying attention. I wasn't comparing Danny Manning to Chris Mack, I was comparing hearing about each of them as a prospect and everyone being collectively underwhelmed amidst rumors of a much bigger, better hire. I'd prefer Mack, but the qualifications of both of them are largely irrelevant because our top target is so much better and I'm posing the information about both of them as strategic leaks or "smokescreens", not serious candidates.

I was paying attention. Chris Mack is actually a reasonable "floor" for a coach. I'd be fine with him. Manning is a pretty unknown quantity. They are completely different.

This would be a monumental bad hire... still in shock we would be this far down the list. ....

I don't Manning would do a terrible job here. I just think we can do so much better.

It's not a coincidence that Danny Manning's name resurfaced today but it's not because Goodman reads these boards.

Bzzz was a monumental bad hire. Manning could turn out to be a great hire.

meh. danny manning is so meh. bright side is that at least he hasn't established himself that he sucks, so i guess there's at least a chance he could be awesome.
This is how I feel. Nothing that says stay away, but nothing that says he will be great. I guess it is a plus that he won a national championship as a player and an assistant coach, so he has that experience going for him.

I'll refrain from freaking the fuck out until we make a hire though.

I don't Manning would do a terrible job here. I just think we can do so much better.

Well that's a reasonable position because the FUCKING POS program in Blacksburg with zero redeeming qualities hired a successful high major coach.

I'm hearing that Larry Drew wants out of Milwaukee; not just the Bucks, all of Milwaukee. Reportedly targeting Wake.

Fuck it, I've talked myself into Manning. He'll at least give Harry Giles pause before he commits someplace else

lets all take a deep breath.

Goodman has repeatedly said he basically has no idea whats going on with Wake. Danny Manning has something to gain from this. Wake has pretty much nothing.

With the complete lack of leaks thus far and RW playing everything close to the vest, I feel like this had to come from Manning's people. Doesn't do any good for Wake to leak this but would help Manning raise his profile.

I could see this. This search has been absolutely airtight. I believe nothing until someone is standing at the podium.

Of course the leak came from Manning's side. The "I'm not sure where he stands on the list" told enough of the story to me.

"It's still unclear where the former Kansas star...sits on Wake athletic director Ron Wellman's wish list."

Danny Manning could turn out to be good for sure. Could turn out terrible. Roll of the dice. Something we really needed to avoid and apparently tried to avoid. The fact is Ron tried and struck out with a bunch of dudes, not just Shaka. Thankfully this is almost undoubtedly his last major hire.
