Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

I saw where Cuonzo removed himself from consideration for Marquette but did he say he was staying at UT? Am I crazy for liking him as a candidate? Damn his teams play tough and rebound the shit out of the basketball which we haven't seen in 4 years. Any evidence that he's been considered?

He signed an extension at the end of last year and they literally just announced it a few days ago. I think that suffices.
 
Remember that shaka buyout dropped $100k today.

He signed an extension in December. His school announced it publicly during the tourney to tamper speculation.
 
I'm April fooling myself into feeling good about this today. This had to be the day, right? This has gone on too long and it feels we're precariously nearing "interim coach" territory...

I don't know who we'll end up with but I believe that most of us will be happy with the person. The only names that have gotten out there seem to be from potential coaches for their own personal gain. I would not put much stock in any of the leaks, remember the MTSU coach being leaked during the football search. I expect that Wellman and the other internal search members are being methodically slow but when they are finalizing a deal with their guy, information will come out quickly and in droves from numerous sources.

Or maybe we've struck out on Shaka, and they're throwing out names of the coaches they're looking at now to gauge fan reaction. Unless there's a presser today, I think it's safe to say Smart isn't coming to Wake. That may already be safe to say. Chairman Ron leaked that he offered Shaka, but we've heard zero word that we have any interest in the other 2 excellent hires, Marshall and Miller. (While I acknowledge Miller isn't in Marshall's or Smart's league yet, he's clearly a way better choice than the other up and comers.) The sad thing is both Marshall and Miller have ties to the NC area. Marshall grew up in VA and coached at Winthrop, and Miller's wife is from NC and he went to State. If we hire a Manning/White/Mack after VT hired Buzz Williams, Chairman Ron has truly made us into LOWF.

The odd thing about all of these searches is that Gregg Marshall hasn't been linked to any school (Cal, Wake or Marq), and he's the best mid-major coach on the market. Before you start leaking names like Manning, Martin, Turner and Wojo, don't you at least call Marshall's agent and ask how does $3mil per sound?
 
It gets a little tiresome to read two or three paragraphs of conjecture. Assume they are facts. And then attack the AD for the pure conjecture. There are certainly reasons to attack Wellman on past performance. There maybe reasons after this search is over. But to make up a story and beat him up is just wrong.

It is weird about Marshall. I think that he has some huge red flag in his background that all the major college AD's know about but nobody talks about. He was an up and coming coach at Winthrop, yet stayed there for 9 years, and then ended up at Wichita St. And he has been there for 7 years. Something about that doesn't add up.

Short of killing 5 hookers while at Winthrop I can't imagine what the red flag is that would prevent him from being hired. Dude wins and wins a ton everywhere he goes.
