ESPN: Danny Manning considered for WFU job, meets with Wellman 3/31/14

At this point, if Smart, Marshall & Miller all were pursued and said no, and our due diligence produced bad info on Howland, then I'll take Manning (or White) and hope for the best. And I think that is some pretty damning evidence that Chairman Ron and Buzzdick killed our signature program worse than we thought.

It's just that many people think Wake is a low-end ACC job (which, let's be honest, it is right now) and your career can go to die at these types of jobs. Now with Tulsa in the AAC next year, it might make sense to make the jump before you struggle in a better conference, but the point remains that young up-and-comers might not jump at the opportunity (even with the $$) to struggle at the next level when they can improve their resumes on the mid-major level before getting a more attractive job.

This. I've said it before, on a wake board, we are going to tend to overrate our job opening. It could be a great job, but that isn't the perception to everyone right now.

My bad, I read after that they are jumping to the AAC. Had they stayed in their current conference, yes, of course.

The AAC will not be that good next year. Cincy loses its 3 best players, UCONN will likely lose Daniels on top of Napier and Boatright might jump ship because they are losing giffey as well. SMU will be the best in the conference as they have a very good class coming in but Tulsa with Manning would have a chance to compete.

Gaudio said Wake was the 8th best job in the ACC when Skip took over. Bull-fucking-shit. Dave Odom took over the reins from the Bz-level Staak disaster in 1989 and finished in the top 5 in the ACC standings 10 out of his 12 years here and every single time in his last 9 years.

This is Dave Odom we're talking about, not exactly a living legend.

Wake was only behind UNC, Duke, and maybe Maryland in recruiting until Bz.

Sure. But I wish those of us who overrate Wake Forest were in charge of convincing candidates to take the job. Instead we've got the kings of the LOWF crowd doing it.

I imagine coaches rank jobs more based on salary potential, kind of like how we all do. How was Dave compensated?

Wake paid its football coach a bunch of money to stay. WAKE FOREST PAID A FOOTBALL COACH A BUNCH OF MONEY. Salary potential is fine here.

We need a new AD.

You're going to have more luck doing that on your own than coming here for help. It took OGBoards 3 years to get rid of Bz.

I'm all for Mike Buddie. Wellman needs to fall on his sword and go.

Yea, but it's the perception of Wellman that's killing us. A lot of Coaches shy away from going to work for a lame duck.

The press conference last week should have been Ron stepping aside. He still can. It would make our job a better one & give us a shot to bring a Coach with an AD in as a package or just hire Buddie.

This is why RW's boss claims to be involved. An incoming coach will seek, and likely receive, commitments that bind RW's successor.

Wellman has too much baggage to make a good hire. Fire Wellman. Let Battle and assistants coach this season while we look for another AD, then let the new AD make the hire.

This hire is too important to mess up. Our new coach will get another 4-5 years... right about the time Roy, K, and Boeheim retire or come very close to it. Any coach we'd like then is going to pass, waiting/hoping to get the Duke/UNC job. Also, when these coaches retire, there will be a possible power vacuum if their successors cannot fill their shoes (see Doherty, Matt). We need our coach/program to already be established to take advantage of that - not pulling ourselves out of the ashes.

Grobe's stock fell so far he could not get the UAB job. Wellman's stock has done the same. Nobody wants to be "his" guy, like Bz was. Bad association. Hatch needs to know when to fold this hand.

...which would make hiring an AD difficult. This is like making a coach keep our current assistants.

I disagree with this. Particularly if the new AD is part of the interview process. Marquette's search was abysmal and they still don't have an AD. A known boss (who is/was chair of the NCAA committee) + knowing the new upcoming boss >> than not knowing who the new boss will be. Wellman has kept this search on lockdown. Let's see what they come up with.

Doubtful Boatright leaves and Uconn adds Rodney Purvis and a 5 star SF. Memphis has a lot of talent. SMU is going to be good. I actually do think Manning is a good coach but there's no way he's in contention for winning that league.

So why don't you make a move to fire him then?

Or shall we enlist the Strattons to produce another billboard?
