Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

I'm interested in the age-range that Manning will be instantly recognizable in though. Obviously at 6'10" he's a commanding presence, but I had no idea what Danny Manning looked like until two days ago. He was also NPOY two years before I was born though.
It's a fair question, but even if a recruit has never heard of him (which I think is doubtful in most cases), 10 seconds of research on behalf of the recruit will solve that. And the recruits coach and parents will tell him. The NBA stuff isn't going to help him seal the deal with recruits but I think it helps him get his foot in the door at the outset.

ON NOTICE:

More than any other quality, we need a coach that can effectively recruit against the legendary coaches in the ACC. We need someone that can attact the top talent to Wake Forest. We need someone who differentiates Wake Forest from the others. I think Danny Manning can be that person and am excited to have him as our coach. While he may not have has enough history to prove without a doubt he can be that person, he certainly has been extraordinarly successful. I think he is worth the risk. He has shown enough at Tulsa that he can coach and he has the name recognition that will put us in the mix for recruits that we may not have had a chance with the past.

We need to get behind our coach because without question, the continuing negativity will drag down the program. Danny Manning has the resume to support being hired as the coach of Wake Forest. We need to have someone who can change the perception the program. It is reasonable to think Danny Manning can be that person and we need to help him move the program forward. In thinking through all the positives, I think we have a very bright future with Danny Manning.

I legitimately think that he'll carry a lot of cred with coaches (HS and AAU) and parents who may remember and/or recognize him from his playing days. Maybe not the players as much -- at least at first -- but definitely with those in their 40s-50s with kids around HS age.

Enough people will recognize him that it will carry weight. "Who is that? Oh that's Wake's coach Manning. Dude was a baller back in the day. #1 draft pick" It certainly isn't like a [Redacted] situation where he can go to a game at HP Wesleyan and sit in the stands and have nobody realize he is the Wake coach and should be sitting in the special coaches section.

I think if was 10 years younger (w/o the NBA career) people would be all for it. Young, up and coming Bill Self protege who takes a lot of credit for the success of their big guys at KU. Took Tulsa to the tournament in his second year there.

Wait, now we're complaining about Manning's age? and saying that he's too old? That's ridiculous. You realize he' younger than Skip was, right? Also the same age as Odom.

So what if Danny Manning were named Alan Smith, was 6 inches shorter, and never played in the NBA? Same exact coaching resume. Are we still OK with the hire?

I don't think we would be, b/c like someone posted earlier, he's 47, so you would expect him to have done more. But he was busy in the NBA for 15 years, and that experience (and exposure) should be helpful in this job.

I hope he can be a really good recruiter, especially with all of these talented NC kids coming up.

He's also not 50. Turns 48 in May. So, what, 15 years younger than [Redacted]?

No this was based on bdz's hypothetical. If he was 6 feet tall, he probably wouldn't have waited 10+ years to start coaching.

Manning's flight lands in an hour. Can I optimistically (or fatally) assume that RW is on the phone with his top choices one last time with a somewhat sweeter deal as a last ditch effort to bring a big name to Wake Forest?

It's Manning or someone worse. Hope it's still Manning.

I don't know. Having been in the NBA is part of what gives Manning more upside though, right?

That's what I'm trying to determine.

No. Manning does not have a resume that warrant an ACC coaching job.

Then you'd be describing a different person and not the candidate we're about to hire. (no duh.) That Manning had a long NBA career, was the #1 overall pick in the draft, and graced the cover of Sports Illustrated are all facts we are hoping and expecting he'll be able to parlay into success on the recruiting trail and in garnering respect from his players.

But to answer your question, (i) no, we wouldn't be, though (ii) a lot of us aren't OK with it even as is.

Then he wouldn't be the same person. This is one of most moronic analogies ever offered.

It's like saying, if Jimi Hendrix only had one hand, tone deaf and hated music, do you think he would have been a good guitarist?

So basically we're hiring Danny Manning because he was good in college, he was a decent player in the NBA for 15 years, and we hope people will think that's cool/that will translate to success in running a college basketball program?

It's Manning or Russell Turner at this point. Some of you donks need to start thinking pragmatically.

Did you not make fun of people on the NBA thread who said Jason Kidd wasn't ready to be an NBA coach?

What if Jason Kidd was a 5'6'' dwarf, white, named Booger McBoogerson and never played basketball a day in his life... you guys think the Nets would have hired him?

You're going to just omit his 11 years of coaching experience?

This is my feeling now. I can live with Manning. I'm just disappointed we didn't get Shaka, Marshall, or Archie, and not real happy with Wellman, but I guess he tried. His legacy now depends on the next few years with Clawson and Manning.

I mean...that's kind of where we're at, no? Look man, I wanted Shaka too and I ain't crazy about DM, but if we truly are about to hire this bro we might as well try and find the positives here.

Very true. I think the question is would you rather have the NBA experience or 10 additional years of runway.

I'd rather have the latter because I don't think the former actually adds all that much.

Manning has comparable experience and success to most of the other up and comers we are looking at and all of the intangibles you mention.
