Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

It is both. I had some eye opening conversations with a NCAA coach this week. Those guys really think that Wake is not an attractive job at all. In fact, being in the new ACC (something we think of as a selling point) is killing us. The word is out that you will be hamstrung by more stringent admissions, battling UNC-ch and Duke for the same recruits, a dysfunctional administration and a team that has spent four years in the crapper. We can hear all the stories we want about Mrs Smart not liking Winston-Salem but the real reason Shaka turned us down is because of the reasons stated. Those are also the reasons that we are now in a bidding war with Tulsa for Manning. It is a hard reality but this is not an attractive job and 95% is self-imposed.

Nothing has changed in fifty years. It's why we are awesome.

Charm is a stable poster, so I would think that's gospel.

27 wins and 28 losses- that was Manning's record 2 months ago. His team then went on a nice winning streak beating the following heavy hitters until they lost to UCLA 76-59:
Rice, East Carolina, Old Dominion, Florida Atlantic, FIU, UTEP, UTSA, North Texas, Tulane, Middle TN, La Tech

This is the coach that Wake feels is worth $2 million per year, someone who was under .500 in a shitty conference a couple months ago. There are other aspects of this hire that should give one pause for concern. It's a bad hire, especially when proven big time winners like Ben Howland are out there.

Manning will be great. Hope we hear today.

I really fail to see the purpose of PMs on a board where creating an alternate handle takes all of 30 seconds.

For fuck's sake people, we give you Babylon and you turn it into Bakersfield, California in three fucking years.

ETA: I have exchanged minimal PMs with posters over the past couple days too. Little information was involved, but still, I'm a hypocrite. But being a hypocrite doesn't make me wrong.

what are PM's? I'm old and don't know that acronym. thanks

I've exchanged a handful of emails with a poster named "Ron Wellman" and he confirmed what we all suspected: were all crazy.

Some of the shit posted on this board is so wrong. People who have tried to give information (apparently like DeacAttack last night) get killed because it's the opposite of what people want to hear/won't out their contacts (ie we struck out on Shaka, which was official last weekend) or because it doesn't fit their narrative that RW didn't contact every better option out there. This is not an attractive job right now, thanks in large part to RW hiring [Redacted]. RW rightfully deserves a ton of blame right now, but you can't kill him for his actions in the coaching search over the past 2 weeks IMO. We just got turned down by a lot of candidates.

I'm fully ready to support DM. Go Deacs!

So we can pretty much thank Hatch for all of this, huh?

Yup...and the culture warriors.

It is easy for someone who did not attend Wake (like myself) to poo poo the high academic standards for athletes. I actually think it is noble for a university to take a stand and say they will not lower their standards to the bottom to attract non-deserving students. Just look at what this has done to UNC's reputation as a place of higher learning. But if that is what you have decided to do you should probably not try to compete in major DI athletics. I know that Clawson has embraced the high standards and has (so far) done relatively well in recruiting. But he has yet to coach a game...yet to lose a game. I am as hopeful as anyone that he will be as successful as any coach ever but the road is rough and long and the university does not make it smoother or shorter.

We'll see how great he is when he can't bring in the same JuCos. You think Hatch will weaken the academic standards to make recruiting easier like Tulsa agreed to do?

We have always had academic standards and taken exceptions. This topic is totally over blown as is the culture issue. All sports teams instill a culture.

Bullshit. If proven winners like Howland and Mack didn't even get a look because of "culture" but Manning, the guy who demanded Tulsa weaken their academic standards to make it easier for him to recruit, who brought in a player accused of stealing laptops and rape (sound familiar), is given a pass when it comes to their "culture", it's total bullshit. Look at the PM palma posted- only five names on it. Maybe it's not accurate, but the fact we're stuck paying DM $2million leads me to believe there's some truth to it. We're making someone with only 2 years head coaching experience and a record of 38-29 one of the highest paid college coaches in the nation. That's nuts.

I'm ready to support Manning as well but Wellman gets NONE ZERO not a shred of credit for how he handled this search. Manning is not a bad option but the fact we're in a bidding war with Tulsa when Wellman purposefully set EXPECTATIONS sky high for another tier of coaches is INEXCUSABLE.

Putting people in a position to succeed isn't that hard and not FUCKING with a beleaguered fan base also isn't that hard. I hope Manning is fantastic and there are a couple positives to latch onto but please don't give Wellman credit for anything. Some posters on this board could have handled this search better from a expectation/media perspective.

look, ok, I think wellman's time here needs to be over. But for the millionth time...there is a reason Ben Howland doesn't have a job and wasn't strongly considered for any openings. And I can't fault Wellman for not wanting to go back to the Xavier well. You can blame the fuehrer for a lot of stuff but not for passing on those two. Be smart and not just a message board moron
