Official Spring Football 2014 Thread (Spring Game Saturday at 2:00)

Does anyone have any requests for parts of the team they want me to watch. It can be a bit overwhelming and hard to see everything, but I can focus on a particular position group tomorrow if anyone has requests. I don't claim to be an expert on football, but I will do my best to evaluate.

You said there's a good focus on special teams. Can you give us a quick list of who is doing majority of KR, PR, PK, and P?

From practice photos on the official site it looks like EJ Scott is catching punts.

I don't believe Sousa can. I can pay more attention to the qb's, but it's really impossible to determine anything until we see Wolford and Smith at practice this summer.

That's why I didn't ask about the QBs. Realistically, only half of the competitors for that spot are on campus.

Was there a practice tonight?

Or, has Wake simply shut down all athletic communication?

ETA: Sorry it took until this morning. I am struggling with my internet connection at home and will have to deal with Time Warner Cable. If you guys have any additional questions I'll do my best to answer them.

Mebane, I know you asked about Ali Lamot. It appeared that he was getting second team reps.

Cumberland, on the picks by Wooding, were they bad throws or good breaks or tipped passes? Just curious if you saw them.

Just announced it on 106.7 The Fan here in DC. The inflection in the announcers voice made it sound like he was surprised (in a good way) with the hire. I know most of us view this a cluster fuck but this will be well received nationally.

No. Most of us don't.

Wrong thread?

From Mocksville on the other board (edited a bit for clarity):

"OK guys lets talk a little bit about our defense which I think will pick up from where it left off from last season even though we lost Nikita. In watching several practices this Spring the thing that has really stuck out to me is how complex the 4-2-5 defense will look to most people. I played on the defensive side of the ball, and I was even thrown back by some of the plays, and schemes that our entire defensive staff have put together. Now to fans, and even to a lot of us that have played the game of football it will look complicated, but to the players it is about as easy of a defense to learn scheme wise. There aren't a lot of play calls that you have to learn which helps the players to have to not think as much and be able to react quicker to the play making it become second nature to them.

. . .

Can I just say that I've never seen a more intense coach as our Defensive line coach. I'm a big tough guy, but I wouldn't want to meet him in an alley. The guy is intense, and that is being nice. He will make our defensive line or he will break our defensive line. Every technique taught by our defensive staff is all about penetration, and getting up field after the QB, or hitting the RB for a loss, where Grobe and staff taught more of a hold your position on the line then when the back comes in the gap slide off and make the tackle. The only problem with that is by then the ball carrier already has picked up 3-5 yards. Again everything that our players are being taught starts with play fast,aggressive, and penetration in the backfield to cause utter chaos to a offense. If we play a team that likes to run a spread no huddle offense the 4-2-5 defense is what the doctor ordered. If a team wants to run the ball and get physical with us, the 4-2-5 defense is what the doctor ordered, and lastly if a team wants to go pass happy on us we can play 5 CB'S, and give them what the doctor ordered the 4-2-5. This defense is just a all around great defense that helps stop the run and pass. "

What he thinks the starting lineup looks like from what he has seen:
DE=Desmond Floyd,
DT=Taylor Harris,
NG/DT=Josh Banks/Looney, both guys are getting equal reps,
Our new hybrid speed rushing defensive end = looks like Shelldon Lewis will get the nod
SS Ryan Javion,
CB=Noel,
CB=Kevin Johnson,
MLB=Teddy Mathews,
MLB=Brandon Chubb

I like the fact that apparently we are going to play more aggressively on defense--that we are going to take the game to the opposition instead of trying to respond to what they do, hoping we can contain them and force a mistake. I hope we play an aggressive style of offense as well, although that could be more difficult with an untested QB.

Basketball has pushed spring football into the shadows. Perhaps now we can get more detailed reports on Clawson and his staff in their first actual opportunity to coach the entire team.

If anyone is goign to practices, I'd love to hear more about the DE/LB hybrid role (and to a lesser extent the Rover DB/LB role, but that's a little more common). Mainly, is the role truly a hybrid (different lineups depending on situation) or is it just a sometimes hand down, sometimes standing in formation role?
