Here's the irony in the Manning negotiations. According to the World, there appeared to be discussion suggesting some lowering of entrance requirements for incoming recruits.
This is common at every school and at every hire. The gate is discussed as either a detriment or a harsh reality at universities considered to be tougher than the average Land Grant U.
Wake is no different, but we know for a fact that Jeff [Redacted] was brought in, in part, to clean up the mess left behind by the recruiting adventures of Skip Prosser and Dino Gaudio.
We can assume the gate wasn't lowered for [Redacted]. In fact, it was raised.
So what happens when the next guy comes in? Is the school willing to lower its standards, even just a little, to get a key player here and there into the basketball program? Is that what Manning wants?
Schools like to pretend they are bastions of higher learning even inside athletics departments. But we know how that works, especially when it comes to football, basketball and to a lesser extent, baseball and women's basketball.

Weird article. Doesn't seem to be about Manning at all.

FWIW...if we're going to keep redacting Bz's name because it's brings back horrible nightmares, what's the point of allowing a Bz avatar? Just sayin.

The reality is some schools pretend more than others. Like anything, there's a sliding scale.

Of all the things behind the firing of Gaudio and the hiring of [Redacted], that was paramount. The old-school alumni were sick and tired of seeing players' names in the news.

[Redacted] cleaned up the program. Give him and the school credit for that.

Just in case you were wondering if this guy actually know what he's talking about.

Recruiting adventures is code for "good recruiting" I assume.

By the way, change your damn avatar!!!!!

Not to sound morbid, but things should improve when all the old white southern churchie money is 6 feet under.

It's got to transition in the next 10 years or so i would hope and pray.

And please redact his first name too.

Where's Chrispy, turftoe, and Naz when you need some REAL moderation?!?

Wake Forest is a tough school. No way around that. For a while there, the admissions department was letting students in who had no business being here.
Just love vague, conclusory assertions like this, as if Ed Hardin has any clue (i) what the admissions standards were for student-athletes before "a while there"; (ii) what specific time period he even means by "a while there"; (iii) what the admissions standards are now for student-athletes post-"awhile there"; and (iv) if the admission standards have ever changed at any point during this period, why they did so and by how much.

Fuck Ed Hardin up his stupid ass. Remember when Wake was perpetrating a legal conspiracy to get Tony Woods off of assault charges so he could play basketball here?

WINSTON-SALEM — October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and here’s a case you might not be aware of.

Tony Woods, a basketball player at Wake Forest, was arrested in September and charged with an assault inflicting serious injury, assault on a female and assault inflicting serious injury with a minor present.

The victim, his girlfriend and a student at Wake Forest, suffered a fractured spine.

Now here’s why you might not be aware of all this: The case has already been resolved.

In what is either an example of efficiency in the judicial system or of an athlete getting preferential treatment, Woods pleaded guilty to assault on a female, and the other two charges were dropped. He received a 60-day suspended sentence and a $100 fine and will have to perform 100 hours of community service, undergo anger management and be screened for drug and alcohol abuse.

Did the sentence fit the crime here? No, says Susan Wies, director of the Victim Services Division at Family Service of the Piedmont, a nonprofit support agency in Greensboro.

“That one concerns me,” she says. “He needs help, and anger management is not what he needs.”

On the surface, this seemed like an easy call. North Carolina guidelines are clear. Woods should’ve been jailed for 48 hours, and the case should’ve been tried to the fullest extent of the system. But that didn’t happen. His attorney, Wake alumnus Mike Grace, called Judge Denise Hartsfield, an adjunct professor at the Wake Forest School of Law and alumna, who made a personal visit to the Forsyth County jail and arranged for Woods to walk away without going behind bars.

Four weeks later, Woods stood before Judge William Reingold, an adjunct professor at the Wake Forest School of Law and an alumnus, and received his sentence. Wake assistant basketball coach Walt Corbean was in court with Woods. The judge told Corbean that Woods would benefit from the structure of the basketball team.

And just like that, it was over.

The victim, 20-year-old Courtney Barbour, has left school and gone home. Woods is awaiting a decision by the basketball program to see if he’s still on the roster. Jeff [name redacted], the new men’s basketball coach, suspended Woods indefinitely when the charges were filed.

“We are suspending Tony Woods indefinitely in order to allow him to devote his time and effort to address the allegations that he is facing,” [name redacted] said in a statement more than a week after police said Woods kicked and pushed Barbour, fracturing her spine while their 8-month-old child was present. “It is also important that Tony have the necessary time to maintain his good academic standing.”

There’s apparently a lot more to this story than we’ve been told. Jim O’Neill, the district attorney in Forsyth County, said his office had spoken with the victim and her family numerous times, and he said the family was more than happy with the sentence.

“We had about a dozen conversations with them,” O’Neill said. “I’m not at liberty to divulge what was discussed, but the family was satisfied with the outcome, and at the end of the day that’s what matters most.”

Barbour couldn’t be reached Tuesday. A spokesman in the Wake Forest University’s registrar’s office said she is no longer enrolled.

On Tuesday, a spokesman from the Wake Forest sports information office said Woods’ status with the team is being evaluated, and a decision will be made in the coming days by [name redacted], athletics director Ron Wellman and Wake Forest president Nathan O. Hatch.

Courtney Barbour was at Wake Forest on an academic scholarship. Her status is she has a fractured spine after an encounter with a 6-foot-11, 250-pound man who will now undergo anger management.

“He’s an abuser,” Wies said. “Nothing about this sounds correct to me.”
Woods was tried and sentenced, quickly, in a legal system filled with Deacons and now we await his status for basketball.

Wies is right. Nothing about this sounds correct.

Fast Eddie is the nickname Prosser gave him. He's an awful writer.

I know this has been brought up before, but given all the talk about the "Wake Forest way" (whatever the hell that is), it really pisses me off that Skip/Dino get thrown under the bus with no actual evidence to support the claim that they were dirty, doing anything wrong, or doing anything to damage the reputation of Wake Forest. I don't buy the whole "Dino hasn't gotten another coaching job" as evidence. Neither has Bill Cowher, but people don't attack his character. /rant

Would love to read an explanation of this comment. In reality, I suspect the firing of Dino had nothing to do with "old white southern churchie" people and more to do with seeking a reason to fire a coach whose record was outstanding due to the recruiting of Skip, but who was truly "in over his head". Most on the board knew we needed another coach due to lack of good head coaching abilities (see offensive sets), and Wellman screwed up by hiring Bz. The firing of Dino was actual popular, and the hiring of Bz was unpopular. This had to do with coaching abilities and not culture and white, southern, churchie people. This is not news to you Moon. Come on...the white, southern, churchie people seem to be doing fine in the SEC in football, basketball, and baseball.

Agree completely. And as has been posted several times, one of the first things [name redacted] did was go out and re-recruit all of Dino's recruits.

Also, Manning will be a great fit for Wake if he can win, build on a proud WF tradition, and avoid NCAA sanctions. I don't think those will be issues, so, yes, he should be a good fit.
