40 Years Ago Today

I've only seen a few highlights of the pre-game, but it looked like Hank was using a walker. Was he?

He's still recovering from hip replacement surgery in February.
He damaged it when he slipped on the ice and fell

Forty years ago today, Hank Aaron passed Babe Ruth to become the Home Run King. He belted an Al Downing pitch over the left field wall.

Dougie and I barely missed catching the ball with our fishnet.

What was wild was half the stadium emptied out by the end of the 5th or 6th inning.

You bought tickets for games in the 1974 season in the fall of 1973? I've only lived in Atlanta for 25 years, but in the time I've lived here, individual game tickets always go on sale in February. Things may well have been different in1973, though.

Especially considering the first three games were in Cincinnati that year.

Ahem....

People talk about it like it was a great catch. It wasn’t. It came right to me. All I remember is right after I caught it, a big fish net went in front of me. Some kid from Georgia Tech had a fishing net on an extension pole. He just missed it.

Apparently rjkarl lies on the internet to look cool.

When you watch the video of Hank hitting 715, you can see the net coming out.
The net is definitely there, but according to the guy who caught the ball, it was being held by a GT student, not RJ and his buddy. That is what I was calling attention to, unless Dougie happened to be a GT student.

Maybe Dougie was wearing Old Gold and House just assumed, combined with the brilliant engineering of the fish net, that he was a GT student.

It was forty years ago. I have no idea what Doug was wearing. I forget who we stayed with in Altanta. It very well could have been someone from GT. We each had friends there.

Deacref and Doug used to have epic ping pong matches in New Dorm.

Doug played on a softball team with 1976Deac andI.

Who was the little guy who brought his own paddle?

I would think that a sports nut who managed to attend one of the great moments in baseball history would have saved the ticket stub, showing his seat number, to prove to people he really was there.
