Retired US Soccer / World Cup Thread (RIP)

Siff, no problem. Glad home team worked out. I hope you enjoyed Richmond and that the tournament went well - heard a guy in arbys yesterday talking about a big tournament, so it must have been a big event.

Thanks, it was. My son's team played a team from MD (Freestate) and looked terrible. Lost 2-1 on a day they'd like to forget - Freestate probably was the least talented in their group. Then they went out an beat up Wilmington Hammerheads academy team for all but the last 30 seconds...we were up 2-1 (should have been 3-1, we scored a header off a beautiful free kick on which our player was incorrectly called offside) and gave up an equalizer with 30 seconds left. Dumb play. We then went out and got our heads handed to us by ASA - had a kid who evidently played for DC United's academy team and came back because he claimed he was taunted with racial slurs (what is this, Russia?). Kid scored four against Hammerheads on Saturday including a sick bicycle kick.

WOW Mexico may just have wrapped up goal of the tourney against England. 1-1. I didn't know women could do that

Well this is scary.

Generation gap between MEX/USA best players: Chicharito is 23, Barrera 24, Guardado 24, Dos Santos 22. Donovan is 29, Dempsey 28, Howard 32.

Yeah seriously. Mexico's '05 U-17 WC winners are coming good for them.

Meanwhile I think we missed our chance to do some damage last summer. Shoulda started Stu Holden (I was saying this at the time) and wish we had drawn any other second-placed finisher in the round of 16

Stu was hurt. Remember the broken leg to De Jong in the Netherlands "friendly". No way Stu was in any kind of playable form.

Yes, and he only played a few minutes in that game (came on in the 86th). Injury concerns, failure to impress or Bob's stubbornness to play him? I tend to believe it was the latter

I normally hate Colin Cowherd, and he was defending Bob Bradley, which made me dislike him even more, but he did make some good points that, while a lot of us are aware of them, a lot of Americans that want Bradley gone do no understand it either.

Basically it was that we do not have nearly as much talent as the teams ahead of us in the FIFA rankings (particularly the top 10). He said that we were the South Carolina of the SEC. We have the ability to go 9-4, but we will hardly ever compete on a consistent basis with the best of the best. We may beat them occasionally though.

God I hate Cowherd so fucking much.

What an awful comparison.

South Carolina has the best and most talented WR in the nation (Alshon Jeffrey). They have arguably the most talented RB in the country (Marcus Lattimore). They literally just signed the far-and-away #1 player in the 2011 class (Jadeveon Clowney). And he thinks that they are a good example of a team that doesn't have the talent to compete with top 10 teams? South Carolina themselves are going to be pre-season top 15 nationally this year, if not top 10.

No way. He was ballin for Bolton. He was obviously a top 5 player for us. I'd even argue now that he's top 3. He would change so much for our team. The injuries could not have come at worse times. Just awful luck on two easily preventable tackles. Anyone that put Holden not playing on Bob is just looking for anything now. Next it will be CD9's car crash that will be Bobs fault.

From another article on Grantland...I think this is spot on:

When will an American forward score at least 20 goals in the Premier League? I don't know if I can go thru another Eddie Johnson, Jozy Altidore, or Juan Aguedelo hunting experience. Will we ever find a fast, strong left-footed defender who can get involved in the attack? Bornstein was always doomed. Will the general public finally accept and praise Clint Dempsey as the player who we actually wanted Landon Donovan to be? If he leads us to a victory in Azteca Stadium. Maybe Stuart Holden can stay healthy and become the best of Claudio Reyna and John O'Brien.

Did he just write off Juan Agudelo at 18 years old? How can you agree with that?

Writing off any 18 year old is stupid. Gotta wait till 22 or 23 to see how they have developed.

Thoughts on our first 11 in 2014? My best guess:

Howard
Chandler Goodson Ream Lichaj
Bradley Edu
Donovan Holden Dempsey
Jozy

My guess:

Howard
Chandler-Gonzalez-Ream-Lichaj
----------Bradley-Edu---------
Bedoya-----Holden----Dempsey
-----------Altidore-----------

However I'd actually like to see Holden in Edu's spot and Adu playing in the hole. But as long as bunker Bob is around we will always play two DMs.

I'll be pretty damn embarrassed if our middle two are Tim Ream and Goodson

Wait...what happened in MLS today?

SoccerByIves Ives Galarcep
Who benefits the most from SJ/DC trade? The USMNT. Opara a steady starter now and Perry Kitchen will hopefully stay at DM, 2 great prospects

Ike traded to DC?

And to think I was wondering why I didn't get a DCU shirt last week.
