Retired US Soccer / World Cup Thread (RIP)

Brandon McDonald got traded to DCU. So now there are fewer CBs in San Jose. Thus, Ike plays constantly.

There ya go.

Wait...what happened in MLS today?

Who benefits the most from SJ/DC trade? The USMNT. Opara a steady starter now and Perry Kitchen will hopefully stay at DM, 2 great prospects

Ike traded to DC?

Brandon McDonald traded to DC for allocation cash. McDonald was one of the guys keeping Opara on the bench (I think)

I'm gonna guess our starting CB's will not have been on the roster for the Gold Cup. And obviously an outside back as well.

3 years is a long time. Chicharito was only a bench player a year ago and now he's considered one of the better strikers in the world. It's obviously easier for that to happen with a striker than a CB, but I think two starting CBs will emerge with more talent than what we've seen from Ream/Goodson.

Chandler - ?? - ?? - Lichaj
-------Edu-Bradley
Adu-----Holden---Dempsey
---------JOZY!----------

Not sure on Holden/Adu. They may be the other way around...or something completely different.

I'm sticking to my guns that Ike will be starting at the 2014 World Cup.

agreed re Ream. And this will get me into trouble, but are y'all hyping up Ike because he is a WF alum or because he has a legit shot?

Ike has a legit shot. He is young, very smart, he is an elite athlete, and though definitely has room for improvement on the playing ball side, isn't starting from nothing. Anyone who has been through our program will know how to play ball, or be comfortable in a team that knows how to play ball.

Any centerback (or just defender) with a pulse right now has a shot, or should. Same with attackers. I don't know that that guy is writing off Agudelo, but our strikers need serious work right now. Altidore is miserable. Agudelo obviously has a lot in his favor, but it hasn't yet completely translated, and though there is an obvious need in that position, he shouldn't be rushed or pressured.

An ESPN Insider article actually predicts him to start. It also has Cronin as a guy to watch.

Onyewu is on the way to Sporting Lisbon according to various internet sites.

Gooch, Beasley, Adu, and Altidore must have a bet going to see who can play in the most leagues.

As another outsider, I think there's more hoping here because he's a Wake guy than is being let on. He certainly has a shot, but he can't stay on the field for any extended amount of time right now. At best I'd say he's fourth among young American central defenders in MLS, and that might be generous at this point.

If I had to pick a lineup for a random game at the 2014 World Cup:

Howard
Chandler Gonzalez Ream Lichaj
Bradley Jones
Gyau Holden Donovan
Dempsey

At least half of that will be laughably wrong if we look back in three years. The only thing I feel good about saying is that there will be someone that no one has really ever heard of before will break into the team.

I agree completely with your last part. Our younger players have so much more potential than even 4 years ago.

Only 7 of the guys on the 2006 WC roster are still making the roster today. And 2 of those 7 never see the field. There's gonna be some younger guys making serious runs at spots which look locked up right now. If I had to guess, I'd say 8 or 9 max of the guys on our roster this past WC will be there in Brazil.

Howard
Chandler-Agbossumunde(sp?)-Goodson-Lichaj
Bradley-Holden
Gatt-Adu-Dempsey
Donovan

Fabian Hurzeler will be 20 in 2014. Way too early to get excited about him, but fuck it, I need something. Realistically, I'd be happy with him developing for 2018.
