BBall Recruiting Megathread - Crawford, Moore, & Collins ALL TO WAKE!

i think you need to take another look at that glass...it's not half empty!

DM has been here a few months and has totally restructured the team, filled in missing pieces that everyone was saying were essential, and has us in the running for good players for '15. i don't think we will be a great team next season but fucking Buzz is gone and that is enough for me to give DM more than a few months before i send him down the river. he accomplished what he said he wanted to do before the season.

expecting any more out of DM in a few months, well, there would be no way to satisfy you.

I don't necessarily agree with you about DM...but I don't think that was his point anyway. Just looking at how things were then (or most of the 20 years before [Redacted]) and now is all.

Late last night I stumbled on CBS Sports and they were replaying the classic triple-overtime win at UNC. Heels were ranked #4 and we were #14. Only caught the last 2 OT's but OH MY....CPIII had already fouled-out with 18 pts and 8 assists, Downey was hitting BOMBS, Strickland was playing great D, Levy was grabbing key defensive rebounds but had forgotten how dominating the BIG E was down the stretch. He was just unstopable in the post with quick turnaround jumpers and power follow-ups for big buckets.

I sat there watching the poise, supreme confidence and talent that team had and how cool Skip was directing things. And then I just shook my head thinking about the teams of the last 4 years as well as what we now have minus Moto and Cav, a transfer from Campbell, a somebody from West Virginia, a recruit from Tulsa and now some kid from Greece. We have fallen so far....looking at that film really brings home the sad reality of things.

With the exception of the #2 #3 player in the country, EVERY Top 100 player had committed for 2014 BEFORE DM was on the job for two weeks. How in the hell can you expect him to sign a top player for 2014 when NONE were available?

What he's done in a very, very limited time should encouraging to anyone with a brain. 2015 is going to tough as we entered the race for top players very, very late. Most of the top players have had relationships with the top programs for two years or more versus less than three months with DM.

If you think that doesn't matter, you have no clue about how things work.

RJ, you have watched basketball for long enough to know that college coaches (at least good ones) often do pretty well their first year in recruiting (the 2015 class for Coach Manning). Its the honeymoon effect. That's why it was obvious to pretty much everybody that when [Redacted] brought in Fischer/Fields/Green, we were fucked.

Encouraging? No. Discouraging? No.

There isn't enough information to make any judgment. Let's see what actually happens w/ the 2015 class before we celebrate or sound the alarms.

i agree, our downward trajectory during the [name redacted] years was something made out of horror movies. i am cautiously optimistic about DM...what has he done wrong without coaching one game? the players that left i am not sure if he could have stopped from leaving and i am not sure we didn't replace their production for this season. i really liked Moto, wish he gave it a little longer before deciding to transfer.

we are fucked and I can't wait to laugh at all you sunshiners

LAUGH i say

LAUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This times a million.

There is a middle ground between signing a ton of 5-stars your first week on the job and Fischer/Fields/Green. What we need to happen are good developments in the context of when he was hired. Not being Buzz is a great development, so he started off with a bang. Now, we need to see more good things, in context. We don't know enough yet to say he's great or awful or at a specific point in between.

Having said that, I still don't feel the resurgence of WFU hoops. What it feels like is that we are tossing offers at everyone who is better than Fischer/Fields/Green. I'm not fired up about some Greek sleeper. Sorry. Maybe this is just a stop-gap measure to get us through the next year, which is fine. But I'll feel better when we sign some known, blue-chip talent.

I want to be clear- I'm not saying Manning isn't doing a good job. I'm simply saying that nothing that has happened so far has rekindled my interest in WFU hoops the way Clawson and crew have done for football.

boy, i bet you are like eating a bowl of razor blades to live with...fuuuu

i choose to have hope, as small as it is at this point.

I bet if you look at the ones who are immediately successful you'll see most are making lateral moves. Turgeon was a perfect example. He was already engaged with many of the players he signed at MD his first year.

Manning didn't have much contact with top players as Tulsa had no shot at them.

Gott did very well early and continues to do so.

Obviously 2015 is the first big measuring stick for Manning. The July recruiting period starts tomorrow, so the next month or two are very important for our future.

It is amazing how much different our roster looks already though. A lot of moving pieces since that great March afternoon.

This is exactly the way I feel as well.

I think I'd feel differently if DM had succeeded in winning over Cav, Moto and our lone top recruit ( he did u-turn Washington ). Would also be more encouraged if some alum was so impressed with DM that he donated $2 million to the program. But that hasn't happened. DM was not on my radar of coveted candidates nor was he ever mentioned - even in passing - by anyone here. I really was convinced that with the Joel purchase and the importance of the WAKE WILL campaign, Wellman/Hatch/BOT was gonna go elephant hunting with $2.75 - 3 million per in hand....and succeed. For whatever combo of reasons it didn't happen and we got DM. Now maybe we got lucky. On paper he's very raw as a HC and the jump from a Tulsa to the new ACC and Wake is enormous. I'm praying and hoping he'll heavily play-up the Kansas/NBA angle in recruiting and succeed in landing 2-3 top 100 kids for 2015.

Gott was HC at Bama. Buzz Williams made a lateral move from Marqueete.

Can there be an exception? Sure, but it's not realistic or what usually happens.

Yes. It feels like we have gone from a guaranteed F to an Incomplete.

I must be missing the tape on this guy or something. Looks like a decent player for pick up at the JCC, not ACC level.

Gott had all the contacts in place.

BtW, Gott's first year at State was 2011. As you can see from Scout (http://northcarolinastate.scout.com/a.z?s=178&p=9&c=4&cfg=bb&yr=2011) , the only 4* he got was Uchebo (and was 3* on Yahoo and ESPN). He also left State for Pitt.

Thus your call isn't very accurate.

No one gets good recruits the month after they are hired. Gott's honeymoon period started in 2012, like Manning's needs to be for 2015. Since he was at ESPN, I hope he wasn't just randomly texting HS recruits to build a relationship when he didn't have a team to represent.

When Manning was hired the lazy analysis was ¨He's a 6'10¨ african american former great player with name recognition so at least he'll be able to recruit studs.¨ I heard this multiple times in talking to non Wake sports fans immediately after the hire.

If one actually looked deeper (and Strickland3 did this very well iirc the day Manning was hired), recruiting was definitely the weakest point on Manning's resume coming in. He was much stronger on the coaching and player development side.

So I wouldn't beat Manning up because he isn't immediately pulling stud commitments to our struggling program. He might need a bit of time to show some progress on the court (which very well could be his strength) first.
