Two years ago, Kingsbury was the flavor of the month, and many thought Texas Tech pulled off a coup when they landed Kingsbury in a 5 year deal for $10.5 million guaranteed.

Well, Kingsbury is now in his 2nd year at TT, and his collective Big 12 record is 4-7 over his two seasons as TT coach, and this year, Texas Tech has already lost by double digits to Arkansas, OK State and Kansas State. At this point, the Texas Tech program is clearly behind Oklahoma, OK State, Baylor, Kansas State, TCU, Texas and is probably behind West Virginia in profile in the Big 12, and is also behind Texas A&M for in-state recruiting mojo meter; so the Texas Tech program has fallen down the list among the Texas schools over the last two seasons. Safe to say that things are not looking super-promising in Lubbock right now as people still don't realize what an amazing job Mike Leach did there.

Now, Kingsbury is young, only in his 2nd year, and it's not like Texas Tech is going to attract John Gruden or even Will Muschamp (after Florida fires him) anytime soon; so, Kingsbury has plenty of time to turn things around, but the idea that Kliff Kingsbury would be the next big thing in college football has jumped the tracks.

Still looks like he's slayin poon all over this great nation of ours.

Mike Leach is 6-15 in the Pac-12.

Granted, a slow start to this season but he's 34, delivered a bowl win last season and a complete sell out of 2014 season tix, which I might add is the first time since 1925 that TT has sold all of their season tix and you're insinuating that he's a loser. This thread has jumped the tracks.

To be fair TT was always behind most of those schools except Baylor and they'll more than likely always be behind these schools since Lubbock is a shithole. I don't think anyone really thought Kliff would be the next big thing in college football, he just got a lot of attention due to his age and demeanor.

He probably should have given Baker Mayfield a full scholarship.

Yeah. It is a cool story and Kliff is a likable guy. I don't think anybody debates that Leach didn't do a great job there. It's not even like TT fired Leach for Kliff.

This is one of the most random hater threads I've seen.

OK. If the consensus is that this is premature, happy to defer the discussion. Looking forward to following the progress of the Texas Tech program.

BTW, Washington State has improved since Leach took over as that program had been in the toilet for years (Washington State played in a bowl last year for the first time in 10 years; Wazzu's previous coach Paul Wolf was 9-40; 4-32 in the Pac 12 before Leach took over; so, in that context, 6-15 is marked improvement). Texas Tech was playing on much higher level when Kingsbury took over. Maybe it's only a blip, but currently things are trending downward in Lubbock.

This is confusing. Pilch, are you completely disregarding the three seasons Tommy Tuberville coached Texas Tech in between Leach and Kliff?

I don't understand how you can declare things are trending downward based on three losses, two to ranked teams and one to an unranked team with losses to highly ranked teams. Looking at the rest of their schedule, they'll probably make a bowl. It's a slight dip at the absolute worst.

Don't be confused.

Leach won big at Texas Tech: 84-43 (47-33 in conference when the Big 12 also had Texas A&M and Missouri), went to a bowl every year including 2008 when Texas Tech won the Big 12 South (with Texas, Oklahoma and Texas A&M). Tuberville is a clown, but he did take Texas Tech to bowls 2 of his 3 years there. At present, Texas Tech rates as either the 7th or 8th best program out of 10 in the Big 12 ahead of only Kansas and Iowa State. Also, if they lose to WV this weekend (which I think is very possible), they are not going to a bowl as they will decided dogs against Oklahoma, Baylor, TCU and will likely be a slight dog at home against Texas (would not be surprised if Iowa State beat the Red Raiders either).

Perhaps, I am way wrong, but I think the expectations were higher than that when Kingsbury took the job.

Too early. They lost 5 conference games a year ago and their best player declared. The defense always sucks. Uniforms still look good.

This will be Pilchard's Jason Terry.

The odds that Kliff has carnal knowledge of an immediate family member of Pilch's has got to be greater than 20%, right?

KK was always a risk hire with high potential upside since he was a Sand Aggie and a good candidate to not bolt Lubbock if he had any success. While it is early, the early returns are not good. Tech is certifiably awful this year-- probably their worst team since before Spike Dykes showed up. Their entire gimmick there is portraying Kliff as some kind of Mac Daddy. In the meantime, that administration really dropped the ball when they fucked over Mike Leach and has been scrambling to cover its ass ever since. They deserve years of cellar dwelling in Lubbock for that alone, and it looks like they and the other team that fired its coach for being a meanie (KU) are going to be duking it out for the next few years. Good riddance to them.
