Karl Hess

not so much as a collapse as being overrated pre-ACC play b/c of the Kansas blowout and wins over decent Michigan and Temple Teams. In Conference play, we were 8-8 with narrow defeats to UNC and Duke.

We also blew out a very good Virginia team at home. It was one of the several times we have looked like world beaters in December/January only to fall apart.

Yeah, used to be our MO back in the Big 4 Tourney days. I remember some writer saying we could always be counted on to have net-popping guards, centers who disappear when they turn sideways and the great February swoon.

That was the team that went into the Nose Dome, still undefeated and #4 in the nation, I believe, only to lose on some super douchey put back by Brendan Heywood, prompting Matt Doherty to cry after the game. To this day, I hope that fuckstick dies of penis cancer because of that.

Yes. Worst ending to a game I can remember. And Darius got hosed in that one too (shocker).

Was at that game :(
Was super embarrassed for Darius the he lost the ball between his legs, terrible way to lose.

Not nearly as painful for him as when he missed the layup against Oregon in the final seconds in 2002.

I was at the game. It was even worse than you think.

I believe that was the game when Julius Peppers had a monster dunk followed immediately by a Dave Odom timeout allowing them to replay the dunk on the video board about 53 times, getting the crowd more fired up than they would have been without the TO.

I was at both games. I scored a seat in the UNC student section right behind the basket he scored at. There once was a photo of a sea of blue, with me standing in the middle in utter shock.

The Oregon NCAA game was brutal. We were playing so well then Dawson went down with his injury. You could tell it completely deflated everything we had built up that game.

I was at that UNC game too. My first thought when reading this was 'no way everyone was really at the Dean Dome,' but then I remembered that's when we all actually cared about Wake basketball. I had completely forgotten that was possible - thanks Wellman.

I think you're right. Dammit I had forgotten about that.

Look on the Brightside: dook is 0-2 since the ACC canned Hess. His boys are caping up for him. Great to see.
