NFL Super Bowl XLIX Sunday Game Thread

people falling for palma's troll job is quite funny to witness

Oops. Not drunk, but definitely sleepy. Maybe they could've kicked a 4 point FG.

You do make a great point that Belichick would of been roasted if they lost the game for his time management skills. How do u let the clock run down and not use ur timeouts when Seattle has the ball on the one? Obviously worked out, but poor job for sure.

calling a pass versus run wasn't the end of the world but calling THAT pass play is definitely the worst call i can ever remember in any sport's championship game

well I ain't brasky level sports smart to start talking about what type of pass play they should be calling. I'm just saying "shoulda ran it twice" is dumb.

So Carroll's basically saying they were saving running Lynch for 3rd down since they only had one timeout.

Don't think you can leave that in your back pocket for the next play in that situation

From reporters on Twitter, it sounds like Bevell decided to pass and called the play, and Carroll's just taking the fall for it.

This is what happened:

1. Seahawks are in 3 WR/1TE/1RB personnel on first and goal at 5, run down to 1 yard line vs. Pats base defense
2. Seahawks very much want to run the same play again vs same Pats defense, but Pats don't want to get trapped in same personnel matchup so they run their goal line out there even though Seahawks still have 3/1/1 and haven't subbed
3. As pointed out before, it is unheard of for the defense to have 8 DL/LB in the game against 3 WR huddled, so the Seahawks are probably confused at this point because this is uncharted waters, so they decided to keep the 3 WR out there and throw.

When Pats subbed and no longer let them run 2nd down with the same personnel matchup (which would have been optimal) Seattle should have gone jumbo and ran goal line vs goal line. But they were likely confused and hurried.

According to overthecap.com Seattle is currently $25M under a $140M cap for 2015. So Wilson's contract shouldn't destroy them.

By contrast the Pats are currently $5.7M over. Worst: Saints $23.2M over ($14M than next worst -- Arizona). Best: Jaguars $63.2M under

Pats cap situation is pretty good thanks to Brady, that number includes revis 22 million option which is very very unlikely to be picked up. I think he is resigned to a new contract the feel if a championship is definitely going to be a big sway in the option to go towards the shitty ass jets or can't make the playoff bills.

So it seems you wanted them to run it right away (to get that 3rd play) with a minute left which these number indicate they score a touchdown and leave Brady a minute to go to tie it 80% of the time, or what exactly are you recommending?

There was less than 30 seconds on the clock.

Did anyone ask Belichick if he was going to let Seattle score if they ran it? And that's why he didn't call timeout?

He wasn't going to let them score. He specifically sent in GL personnel to stop the run.

Solid cover from the NY Daily News, as usual

Darrell Bevell says Lockette could have been stronger to the ball.

Dude is digging in.

Yeah, that's stupid. Lockette went hard enough to the ball to get knocked two feet into the air and onto his ass.

For me the best comparison is that it feels kind of like the Spurs losing to the Heat in 2013 (Pop benching Duncan for the Allen play = Carroll throwing a slant on 2nd and Goal) but at least I wasn't rooting that hard for the Seahawks like I was for the Spurs. Bellichick not calling timeout is a worse decision than Carroll throwing a slant.

Yep. The Seahawks and Spurs stole defeat from victory.

I think it's worth mentioning that Butler also made a good play on the ridiculous completion to Kearse at the 5-yard line. Got his hand on the ball, it just landed on top of the receiver.

HAHAHA, that's funny.

Great game, wow, tons of fun

At the end of the day the 'best defense in the NFL' gave up two TD's in the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl.

Seattle defense was at about 50% and it still took a dumb play call for them to lose. If they were at full strength it would have probably been just like last year. Only thing Brady could get off was two yard passes. They had two guys playing with one arm, one guy playing on one leg and then lost two more to a concussion and a broken arm.

Also took one of the luckiest catches of all time to set them up for that bad play call.
