2016 Football Recruiting Thread - Notes from NSD Press Conference and Reception

The few articles on Walker rave about his athleticism and come with the typical claims about 4.4 40 times. Unfortunately it doesn't look like Walker attended a Nike camp so I don't have combine results that I trust. On the other hand, maybe he would have blown up even more if his combine numbers were widely available.

We have to be impressed/encouraged by the recruiting successes of this staff coming off a really weak season last year.

The hill is steep, but we are making substantial strides. Hopefully this season will reflect a bit of that in our ability to compete on both sides of the ball.

I got the impression the App kid committed now because their coach wants them to commit before the season starts. He could be game to flip before signing day.

Updated commit info (247/Rivals/ESPN/RBO rankings updated)

Not much movement in the rankings from my last update. Big things I noticed was Maggio shooting up ESPN's ratings. ESPN is usually pretty lazy about rerating and reranking recruits, so I generally pay attention to major movement there. Also, I like that Redd and Zimmer are still holding their weights in RBO rankings. Zimmer, in particular, actually moved up another few spots. I'm probably more excited about him than I am about any other recruit in the class.

Yeah. Two of the top 4 players on Rank By Offers are DEs.

Walker chose Wake over Georgia and Penn State.

I love the sound of that.

It's probably a very reasonable assumption that Walker's offers at Georgia and Penn State weren't committable. Same with his teammate's offer at Miami.

That doesn't diminish my enthusiasm for Walker at all really. Getting a kid who just missed the cut at Georgia and Penn State is probably a kid that has a lot potential.

This is an interesting time with a few recruits that I had dismissed our chances with now coming back into the picture. The staff appears to have done a really nice job of continuing to stay involved with players like Sulaiman Kamara, Larry Collins and Donald Stewart even when I thought our chances were slim to none. Now when those players are finding some other doors closing Wake seems to be in a good position with some high quality recruits.

I know I've asked before, but we're now up to 19 commits and are apparently still chasing a few more.
How many will eventually be in this class and where are the scholarships coming from?

(Maybe it's the new 'Wake Exemption' that says that the smallest schools with historically poor win/loss records get 90 scholarships until they catch up)

So I was updating the scholly chart, and something gave me some pause. I added the two new walk-ons (Ben Brown and Crawford Sloan), but there was a third guy (Sam Beckerman) who's confusing the hell out of me. Beckerman is a rising junior that transferred from the track and field team to be a placekicker. Do we think he's taking up a scholarship or not? I'm assuming based on the language in his WF bio that he was taking a scholarship for track and field. It would give us 4 P/PK on scholarship by my count, but Centers is obviously out for the year, so maybe the extra scholarship was deemed necessary?

Walk-on Ben Brown is the backup kicker, so I think it is safe to assume that Sam Beckerman is mainly a track guy.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the rule that if a scholarship athlete plays football, his scholarship has to be considered a football scholarship? To prevent schools from giving 20 extra scholarships to fake track athletes who are really there to play football?

If the kid really has anything close to that kind of speed, wouldn't he more likely be a linebacker than a defensive end?
