Wake Football Summer Thread

Which black jersey? We now have 2 of them...

And which black helmets, don't we have more than one of those too? You've got to be specific. Can you imagine the Oregon coach, "saying we're going with the green helmets, green jerseys, and yellow pants. Ummmm, what shades of those colors coach?"

I'm still a fan of the one and only venerable gloss black helmets with the gold logo- classy! :)

We'll see what the kids pick is to wear this week as Clawson lets them choose.

Matte black helmets, gold sleeve black jerseys, white pants.

Very interesting tidbit from the game notes on the official site.

"Wake Forest’s six-member senior class is the smallest senior class in FBS, and marks the fewest seniors since 1944 when the U.S. was involved in World War II."

Fewest for Wake since WW2 or fewest for anyone since WW2?

On his radio show today Coach Clawson confirmed that the following players will not redshirt: Kendall Hinton, Tyler Bell, Matt Colburn, Tabari Hines, Charles Wade, Alex Bachman, Chris Calhoun, Dionte Austin and Garrett Wilson.

A decision will be made as the early season progresses about whether Rocky Reid and Amari Henderson will play this season. Reid has an ankle injury and has missed a lot of practice time. Henderson impressed early before pulling a hamstring.

Refreshing to see that we will play true freshmen if we think they can help and are ready to contribute. Think Grobe's redshirt philosophy definitely helped build the program but I know there were several guys that could have potentially been the difference in a few games. Ultimately that could have swung it in our favor for more wins. Hard to predict obviously but think we were a little too conservative in that with some guys in the past.

For slightly different take on the depth chart, here is a breakdown by recruiting class:

2015 class: 7
2014 class: 15
2013 class: 7
2012 class: 6
2011 class: 2

Note: I excluded post-grads, former walk-ons and specialists from the list above and the observations below. Also if the depth chart went more than two-deep I included only the first two.

Of the 36 players on the two-deep that signed LOIs at Wake, 59% were in either the 2014 or 2015 classes. A remarkable 78% were signed between 2013 and 2015.

It’s worth taking a closer look at some of the recruiting classes:

The 2012 class had 19 commits. That class yielded 4 starters (Banks, Tylor Harris*, Hayworth, Janvion), 2 backups (Suggs, Williams), 1 injured starter (Crump), 4 players that made failed to make the 2-deep, and 8 players that left the program. If you count starters, backup and injured starters as “hits”, that is a hit rate of just 37%.

The 2013 class had 23 commits. That class has yielded 5 starters (Cam Serigne, Marquel Lee, Wendell Dunn, Josh Harris and Brad Watson), 2 backups (Josh Okonye, Tyree Harris), 1 injured starter (Ejiofor), 9 players that failed to make the 2-deep and 6 players that left the program. That is a “hit” rate of just 35%. (Side note: 3 of the 4 Texas recruits were “hits” and the 4th is Dez Wortham)

It’s too early to draw the same type of conclusions about the 2014 class, but it’s noteworthy that 15 of the 24 non-specialist signees (63%) are already on the 2-deep. 6 players from that class are either suspended (Anderson) or have left the program. That leaves only 3 players currently practicing that are not yet on the two-deep and at least one of those (Wary) looks like he will be a “hit”.

As expected, Clawson is getting his own players in as soon as possible. Can you breakdown the 2014 hit rate between Grobe and Clawson recruits? I think it's probably close but I'm not sure.

On his radio show today Coach Clawson confirmed that the following players will not redshirt: Kendall Hinton

Given our lack of experience at the skill positions and the O-Line, why play Hinton this year? Let Wolford do the heavy lifting and allow Hinton to grow into Clawson's system while our incoming talent matures. Why burn a redshirt on spot duty? Are our backup QBs that bad?

what backup QB's do you speak of?

Need to even out the QBs by class. Redshirt Kearns, redshirt Newman and we will have one QB in each class( barring unforeseen circumstances ). Plus, John could go down in the first game ( Mauk/ Skinner) We need a guy to be ready to go.
