We're trying to make a decision about which of the two major standardized tests - SAT and ACT - our oldest should take. He's in the seventh grade and he has to take one for some reason or another and the wife is stressing over which is best. Does anyone have any information or opinions as to whether one or the other might be better to take or more useful for evaluative purposes? More widely accepted? Easier for which to prepare? Any help appreciated.

I'm pretty sure SAT is more widely accepted, but can't you just take both and use whichever is stronger?

7th grade? Calm down.

Thanks for your concern, but I'm quite calm. It's for some program, not college. I took the SAT in the seventh grade decades ago for the same purpose; I think a lot of folks do. However, I never took the ACT and know nothing about it.

So, I taught to the ACT when I was teaching and the best advice that I can give is that it depends on your kid. The ACT tests more of what you are supposed to be learning in high school and the SAT is more of an aptitude test, so, depending on where your son is, one test can make more sense than the other. A 7th grader would probably do better on the SAT than the ACT simply because the content of the ACT is very specific to HS curriculum. The SAT relies more on logical thinking. When it comes time to take the test for real though (i.e., for college), choosing the right test can make a difference as they are fundamentally different in what they measure.

Apparently townie wasn't about that TIP life as a youth

Well, without knowing more about the requirements of the program, it's tough to give good advice.

I was an admissions counselor and tutor of each of these tests for a few years and know a good amount about the differences if you're looking for specifics and would like to PM.

Wasn't trying to be glib/callous.

The fact that you haven't been making him study for both tests for the last few years should be considered child abuse and anti-American. Basically conceding China will win. Make American Great Again- #Trump2016

Townie did some program that was better than TIP. You've probably never heard of it. There were no tests. Kids just wrote how they felt about themselves.

Johns hopkins summer camp, cty?

The TIP award ceremony was actually the first time I ever went to wake forest's campus

I didn't realize Wake hosted TIP now. That would have been great back in the day. I worked at TIP at Davidson all four summers while at Wake. Working at Wake would have been a lot better.

I meant I went for the award ceremony when I crushed it as a 7th grader

I actually worked at Davidson TIP one summer as well

Not sure if Wake hosts the summer camps, it'd be a fun campus to do it
