Season long College football thread

I'm not. This might be the worst Heisman race since Gino Toretta won.

No, it's the worst since 2009, which was possibly the worst statistical year in Heisman history.

2009 also featured an Alabama RB with inflated stats due to a dominant offensive line and volume attempts as well as a white Stanford RB who finished second.

The Heisman has become a farce! It's a popularity contest. It hasn't been about the best player in college football for a very long time. Elliot and Fournette not even being invited is ridiculous.

Maybe if O$U hadn't played such a Charmin soft schedule, Elliott would have been invited. Too bad.

It's never been about the best player in college football. With very few exceptions, it's been about the best QB and/or RB.

So what's the argument against the QB from the undefeated #1 team in the country?

Interesting tidbit. Cam Newton could be the first Heisman winner to win NFL MVP. The five players to do it before were all RBs and the most recent was Barry Sanders.

I noticed people were saying this last year as well. I think this feeling is more a result of the networks focusing all their attention on the playoff instead of whose going to win the Heisman. The three guys in the running this year are pretty legit.

McCaffrey broke a near 30 year record for total all purpose yards in a season, Watson is the starting QB for the undefeated #1 team in the country and more than likely will be the #1 QB selected in the 2017 draft while Henry had a better season than Lacy, Ingram or Richardson ever had.

Pass happy offense that inflates stats. Easy schedule.

No different than the NCAA basketball player of the year. Steve Alford got it years ago for crying out loud, so it is definitely a popularity contest. But even the pros don't always know their craft because the Top 10 first round picks don't always make it big either [see Reggie Bush, Aaron Curry, Ryan Leaf, Matt Leinart, DaMarcus Russell, et al] and recently Heisman winners haven' t either with RGIII or Manziel but hopefully Newton is breaking that string.

So this. What McCaf did was incredible. He should win it but at some point it morphed into an MVP, team has to make the playoff award, unless you're a QB who does ridiculous things (RG3, JFF)

This is true, however it's more like "the best QB or RB on the best team".

In 2009 Mark Ingram had one of the worst statistical seasons for any Heisman winner ever. He had 271 attempts and 1658 yards which was 6.1 ypa.

Leonard Fournette, Dalvin Cook, Royce Freeman and Ezekiel Elliot all have more rushing yards and better ypa averages this year than Ingram did in 2009.

Derek Henry is going to win the Heisman this year. He has 339 attempts and 1986 yards which is 5.9 ypa.

7 of the other top 10 RB's in total yards this year (including Fournette, Cook, Freeman and Elliot) all have significantly higher ypa averages than Henry.

Henry is good, but likely no better than any of those other guys. He just gets more volume based on Alabama's offense. He also happens to be the best player on the best team, which is the most important Heisman criteria of all.

Speaking of Henry's workload, what Saban is doing to him (90 carries in 2 games) is likely taking years off Henry's NFL career. It's pretty clear that running back's have a limited shelf life. Saban is shortening that shelf life for Henry.

Saban doesn't give a "F" about Henry's NFL career. Saban cares about Saban.

He sure cares about those up-tempo offenses that are to the "detriment" of the student-athlete, however!

Truth. Saban ran Eddie Lacy into the ground at the end of his final season knowing he had a horrible case of turf toe at the time. Just injected it pregame and kept sending him out there. Almost ruined his NFL career if not for some excellent work of some ortho surgeons.

Oh the horror of a college football coach giving his best player a bunch of touches in two must win football games. Im sure Henry wishes he could have his workload reduced. Stop being so fucking dense.

Also McCaffrey has had more touches than Henry the last two weeks. Does that make David Shaw the goddamn devil?
