You can take that "conditioned by the boards" crap and stuff it. I watched just about every damn game last year and suffered through every excruciating minute of Ty Walker seeing the floor in a Wake uniform.
Look, if you go all out you can make your school and fans proud even when you don't play well. But Ty Walker's horrible attitude, his reactions on the bench, his pouting, his selfish play on the floor - it starts with his going-for-the-highlight blocks and in the background he's giving up career highs. He's like a showboating defensive back who makes a few picks by cheating off his man but gives up 3 td's a game.
The UVA game you think he played so well in? 1 rebound. A 7 footer. Against UVA. ONE DAMN REBOUND while Travis pulled down 10. Such a total lack of effort, plus he gave up another career high in points to their center. If he put a tenth as much energy into boxing out and grabbing a rebound as he did yelling for the ball in awkward post positions he'd be starting - instead we have to throw a should-have-been-redshirted Carson Derosiers to the wolves.
So no, I do not agree with your premise that his "natural ability" is somehow a "game changer" when he plays well. You can fawn over his shot blocking all you want - the substance is not there. He routinely leaves his man for open layups on defense, takes horrible shots on offense, disappears completely for long stretches, and hasn't boxed a player out in his career at Wake. Even when he's playing "well" you're still getting that stuff packaged with it, and he's a liability.
Every time Ty has seen the floor for Wake up to this point it's been a net loss for the team. Don't see that changing next year, if he manages to stay on the team.
