Wake Forest's own Tommy Elrod caught leaking football information to other teams

Love how the Louisville statement acts as if it's completely normal to have someone with ties to the opponent contact the coaching staff and send over a handful of plays during the week of the game.

1) Everyone is entitled to an attorney in a criminal defense matter;
2) Wake will, ultimately, have little to do with whether criminal charges are brought- that will be up to the DA/AUSA when and if they get involved;
3) Absent a situation where Wake has completely fucked Elrod, the defense of any criminal charges will most likely be related to a plea deal more than litigating this matter in the press;
4) There may not even be any criminal charges- Quander might be representing Elrod merely to provide counsel and cover to avoid any public statements. Elrod can refer everything to Quander, which: a) prevents him from being misquoted in the press; and b) precludes any law enforcement from talking to him prior to arrest.

None of those things are likely to piss off Wake.

Not to mention, if you had a friend who was a criminal defense lawyer and had known you for 20+ years, would you expect him/her to turn their back on you if you were accused of a crime?

100% agree. WF should have no issues with Quander representing Elrod. Hard to understand why people are straining to cast blame on anyone other than the perpetrator.

"We're disappointed y'all are distracting us from our bowl preparation. Shame on you."

Yeah that is bad. Not sure what extent it goes to.

Like did he diagram plays on the phone/on paper, or say something that could have been found out anyway ("Wake likes running deep outs on 3rd and 7")?

Sounds like specific information was sent. And his is UL's spin on it. Not good.

Ed needs to dial the drama back a bit.

This is college football, not international policy, after all.

Strongly disagree. I have never -- NEVER -- heard a sports betrayal story this sick in my life. This is an all-time worst case scenario among college programs. Whether its hate and bitterness or money, or both, at the bottom of this the depth of Elrod's character in this crime is hard to beat. This isn't point-shaving, it's not betting, it's a calculated betrayal of trust on a massive scale. As if Wake needed another huge negative in a sports history with very few positive moments.

Good one.

We should've never allowed Louisville into the league. It is a bush-league school and athletic program. They're basically admitting guilt, but playing it off like it's no big deal.

Nothing to see here, folks.

Every school (and most professional teams) give essentially unlimited access to the team's radio broadcasters. While technically not University employees, the broadcasting contracts typically give the school veto power over hiring decisions as they are representing the school during the game broadcasts. Throughout the NCAA, broadcasters are uniformly treated as part of the program which means traveling with the team, hosting/participating in booster club events, attending practices and meetings as they are the most significant mouthpiece and communicator of the largest volume of information about the football or basketball team they cover. It's important and helpful for the school for the play by play guy and the analyst to know insider details including gameplans when they broadcast the games. The school and the program want the broadcasters to be informed so that they can be informative.

Blaming WF for giving Elrod access to WF football inside dope is insane. Literally, every football and basketball broadcaster for every school has access to information which the school otherwise keeps confidential. Unreal to the extent some are going to cast blame on anyone other than the guy who: a) graduated from WF; b) played football (or at least was on the team) at WF; c) coached at WF; d) acted as the mouthpiece for WF football for 3 years e) used his access to confidential WF information to intentionally make it more difficult for WF to compete. Let's not grasp to try blame others for one persons horrendous actions.

I don't think we know enough to make that claim. Was Elrod simply talking to opposing coaches? Did he have access to playbooks and other materials we should not have had?

And if there's nothing Wake could have done to prevent this over the last 3 seasons, does that mean there's nothing we can do to prevent it going forward?

Not sure about all this. We ran the orbit for the only time I can recall all season. We actually gave the ball to the flanker in motion, instead of faking, and Louisville tackled hm for a 5 yard loss. It was like their defensive end knew it was coming. That was especially suspicious given this situation.

Not likely is different from your original statement. I mean, I don't dispute the 4 points you make, but the wildcards of emotion and Wellman seem like good reasons to steer clear, looking at the just from a business perspective.

Depends on the crime, right? And how personally it affects you, those you associate with and those you do business with. i.e. your relationship to the victim(s) matters. There's a difference between representing someone who stole from your mom and someone who stole from Joe Blow, no matter how long you've known the accused.

I mean seriously, the nonchalance of the letter vs the description of the disclosure is amazing.

yeah, like i said before, real programs are used to this stuff. welcome to the big leagues, boys!

Louisville AD says Lonnie Galloway received information from Elrod the week prior to our game with them

So is Galloway gone? Or is UL going to categorize this as smart scouting?

Because they did know. :mad:
